After 85 Years, DC Upgrades Aquaman into a Full-Fledged Cosmic Hero

Aquaman, often hailed as a hero of the sea, now aims to protect the entire universe. It’s been exciting to see his growth in his current comic book series. After losing his wife, daughter, and the kingdom of Atlantis, Arthur embarked on a mission to restore his family and his home. Thanks to Mera’s powers – which she gave him after a major power shift – Aquaman has evolved in surprising and impressive ways.

While searching for his purpose, Aquaman teamed up with other heroes who control water, eventually creating his own version of the Justice League called Justice League Blue. Even more impressively, Aquaman has become the embodiment of the Blue, a powerful magical force linked to all ocean life throughout the DC Universe. But recently, things took a turn for the worse when his mother-in-law, Lolanna, Queen of Xebel, took over his role. She turned Arthur into water, making him vanish, though DC Comics has major plans for the famous king’s return.

Aquaman Goes Next Level and is Heading Out to Protect Water Life Everywhere

In the fifteenth issue of Emperor Aquaman, written by Jeremy Adams with art by John Timms, Rex Lokus, and Dave Sharpe, Aquaman is fractured into multiple versions of himself. A younger and older Aquaman meet and travel to a replica of their former lighthouse home. There, they encounter another piece of Aquaman’s consciousness, and the three discuss Lolanna’s attempt to steal the Blue dimension. Despite some initial conflict, all three Aquamans unite when they learn Mera is in danger. Together, they find a way to escape the Blue and return home.

Okay, so things get really intense in the Pacific. Mera’s fighting her mom, but Lolanna’s tapped into this incredible power source – the Blue – and it’s making her almost unbeatable. She even uses Aquaman’s trident against Mera! But Mera’s smart; she feels Arthur’s energy within the trident and calls out to him. And just when things look dire, Aquaman bursts forth, fully connected to the Blue’s power again. He manages to banish Lolanna back into the Blue and, thankfully, reunites with Mera. They even revive Justice League Blue! But the coolest part? Arthur uses his magic to finally lift the spell hiding Atlantis, bringing everything – and everyone – back into the light. It’s a pretty spectacular finish!

Okay, so there was this huge ceremony for me, Aquaman, addressing the Atlanteans. Honestly, though, I was kinda overwhelmed thinking about everything now that I’m, you know, the guy for all things water. I told everyone we can’t just stay hidden underwater anymore. If we want to really fight the threats coming our way, we have to team up with all the other creatures out there in the ocean – even those not from Earth! I put on a bit of a show, asking who would join me in protecting all water life across the cosmos, and the whole kingdom just erupted in cheers. It was a pretty epic moment, if I do say so myself.

Emperor Aquaman Continues to Show How Awesome Arthur Curry Really Is

For years, while dedicated fans loved Aquaman, most people thought of him as a weak superhero, mostly because the Super Friends cartoon portrayed him as just someone who talked to fish. However, that perception has been changing. Recent comics by writers like Geoff Johns, Kelly Sue Deconnick, and Ram V have showcased his true power and potential, and the Aquaman movie introduced him to a new audience and boosted his popularity. The current Aquaman comic series is capitalizing on this momentum, making the character even more impressive and relevant.

It’s true that taking Aquaman into space seems a bit unexpected. However, other heroes who started on Earth have explored the cosmos, and it actually makes sense for Aquaman’s story. Given his connection to the Blue – and all water life in the DC Universe – it opens up possibilities, especially since we know other planets have water. While Aquaman has largely been limited to the ocean, space offers a chance for a much larger and more exciting adventure.

I don’t believe the changes to Aquaman are just for shock value or to create a bizarre storyline. It feels like a logical next step in his journey within this series. As the embodiment of the ocean, Aquaman has the potential to truly benefit the entire DC Universe, and I’m eager to see where this new direction takes him. While it’s definitely a bold idea, long-time fans know that Aquaman often excels when things get wild and unpredictable.
