After 86 Years, We’re About to See a Joker Like Never Before

The Joker has been a major part of Batman’s world for a long time, but we might be about to see a completely different version of the character. While he’s always been the focus of many Batman stories – even appearing in the DC K.O. game – some fans are starting to feel like his usual tricks are getting old. But what if I told you the Joker is undergoing a significant transformation?

Okay, if you haven’t been reading the current Batman comic by Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez – seriously, you’re missing out, it’s fantastic – there’s this really interesting story unfolding. They introduced a new character, Dr. Annika Zeller, who works at Arkham Towers. But she’s quickly become central to everything, because of this amazing new psychiatric treatment she developed called the Crown of Storms. It’s powerful stuff, and it’s made her a target for some seriously dangerous people. We’re even seeing one of Batman’s classic enemies experiencing the effects of the Crown, and it feels like things are about to change in a big way.

Dr. Zeller is Putting the Crown of Storms to the Test with the Joker

Early in the new Batman series, Bruce Wayne sees Dr. Zeller on TV discussing her innovative technology, the Crown of Storms. This device aims to treat mental illness by controlling electrical activity in the brain. Bruce is surprised to learn that the Wayne Family foundation is helping to fund the project. Things get even more complicated when the Riddler tries to steal the Crown, hoping it will cure his obsessive-compulsive disorder. Soon after, Batman discovers rumors that Dr. Zeller is secretly testing the device on patients at Arkham Asylum.

Batman, as Bruce Wayne, tries to learn more about Zeller by getting to know her personally. He takes her out, hoping to find information about Annika, but discovers someone has put a price on Zeller’s head, attracting the attention of many bounty hunters. Bruce protects her for the night, but their evening is cut short when Robin slips up and calls Bruce ‘father’ in front of Zeller. Bruce ensures she’s safe before leaving for the night.

Batman is dealing with the aftermath of the attack on Annika, discovering it was orchestrated by Hugo Strange, one of her harshest critics. Meanwhile, Annika has returned to work at Arkham Towers. While meeting with a patient and working on the Crown of Storms, she finds it has been damaged again. Zeller repairs it with a new material and prepares to reapply it. The patient is revealed to be the Joker, who patiently awaits his treatment and considers how to contact Batman.

Is This the Treatment That Will Change the Joker for Good?

Annika deserves recognition for her efforts. She’s boldly testing her Crown of Storms on the Joker to see if it truly works, and surprisingly, it seems to be having an effect. It’s odd that the Joker has gained weight and looks injured – perhaps from some recent fighting – but the Crown does appear to be changing his behavior. He’s acting polite, calm, and doesn’t seem interested in escaping.

I’ve followed Joker’s story in comics for a long time, and he’s been temporarily cured or stabilized in several ways – everything from magical Lazarus Pits to Martian Manhunter’s mental intervention. So, I’m skeptical about how well this new ‘Crown of Storms’ treatment will actually work. It seems characters like Hugo Strange and the Riddler believe in it, and so far, Annika appears to be making progress with Joker. Plus, upcoming issues of Batman suggest the dynamic between Joker and Bruce Wayne is about to change significantly.

Comic books often stick to familiar patterns, but I’m really curious to see how this story unfolds. Will the Joker truly change for the better? Or will he remain a dangerous threat, even with his newfound sanity? I believe the creative team has a significant development planned, and while it’s a mystery right now, I expect it will be worth the wait as the Joker’s story expands and we learn more about the impact of the Crown of Storms.
