It’s unusual for a struggling franchise, particularly in gaming, to recover. Most times, a major failure means the end for a series. But occasionally, a forgotten franchise will be revived for one last attempt. When this happens, both longtime fans and new players eagerly watch to see if it can recapture its former success or if it will repeat the errors that led to its downfall.
A once-popular game series that unfortunately declined is getting a fresh start, and I’m particularly excited about it. I usually just watch these kinds of revivals with mild interest, but this one feels personal – I really hope the developers get it right this time. I’m talking about Dawn of War, and the upcoming Dawn of War 4. It’s not only one of the most anticipated strategy games of 2026, but also a chance to fix the major problems with the poorly received Dawn of War 3.
Dawn Of War 4 Needs To Be A Return To Form

I didn’t have much access to video games as a kid. My older brother usually had the computer – a bulky, old PC that struggled to run games smoothly – and I was only allowed to play a few titles. One of those was Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, a strategy game set in the fascinating and dark Warhammer universe, which is still great to play today. What made it so good was its blend of building a base and controlling units, the many different armies and detailed soldiers you could command (especially with all the expansions), the ability to customize each army’s look, and the tons of maps that kept the game fresh and replayable.
I discovered Warhammer through its first Dawn of War game, which sparked a lasting love for the Astra Militarum and a hidden passion for strategy games. When I finally got a laptop and access to Steam, I immediately bought Dawn of War 2. However, I was a little let down. It wasn’t a bad game – I actually enjoyed the stronger story and new factions – but it changed the gameplay too much. Instead of improving on what made the original so great, it felt like a completely different game. It didn’t build on Dawn of War; it reinvented it. I was hoping the sequel would bring back the base building and territory control that made the first game so special.
Man, I really had hopes for Dawn of War 3, but it was a huge letdown. It tried to connect the older games, but they threw in these MOBA bits that just didn’t fit, and there wasn’t nearly enough content to begin with. Plus, they just stopped supporting it soon after it came out, which was a shame. I actually held off playing it for years because I remembered how disappointed I was with where they were taking the series, but I finally gave it a shot a while back. And yeah, everyone was right – it was honestly pretty terrible, especially compared to how amazing Relic Entertainment made the first Dawn of War over a decade before that. Honestly, all the problems with Dawn of War 3, and some of the changes they made in DoW2, are what ultimately killed the series. It’s been nine years since then, and we haven’t even known if we’d get another game to bring it back.
As a big fan of the Dawn of War series, I’m really excited about Dawn of War 4. A lot of sequels these days try to reinvent the wheel, and honestly, it often falls flat – I’ve seen that with some Sony games. But sometimes, the best thing a sequel can do is build on what already worked! I felt like Dawn of War 2 and 3 strayed too far from the original formula, and it really hurt the series. I’m not saying we shouldn’t have innovation, but in strategy games especially, it’s better to refine a great idea than to completely abandon it. From what I’ve seen, Dawn of War 4 seems to be heading back to the roots of what everyone loved about the first game, and that’s exactly what I’ve been hoping for!
Dawn Of War 4 Is Perfectly Positioned To Be The Perfect Warhammer Game

King Art Games would be the perfect choice to develop the next Dawn of War game. Their release of Iron Harvest felt more like a true sequel to the original Dawn of War than DoW2 ever did, proving they understand what made the original so great and how to improve upon it. The upcoming Dawn of War 4 is clearly taking inspiration from the first game, as shown in the announcement trailer and previews which focus on classic skirmishes. It’s bringing back beloved features like base building, army customization, and control points to recapture the iconic Dawn of War experience fans remember.
Even though my preferred faction isn’t included (hopefully they’ll add the Imperial Guard later), Dawn of War 4 appears to be a great strategy game. It also shows that sometimes sticking with successful formulas is better than constantly trying new things. We recently saw how well reviving an older style worked with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, and Dawn of War 4 looks like it will prove that the real-time strategy games from the early 2000s – like Command & Conquer, Dawn of War, Starcraft, and Halo Wars – really had the right idea all along.
I’m hoping things will improve, but it’s frustrating to see beloved game series end prematurely. The gaming industry is still relatively new, so we quickly become invested in promising franchises that could easily be cancelled. With the industry constantly changing and trying to find a stable future, it’s especially important to cherish the games that have been successful and hold a special place in our hearts.
I, like many fans, have a strong connection to Dawn of War, so I’m thrilled it’s back, but also anxious about its future. As I mentioned earlier, second chances are rare in the gaming industry, and it’s vital that we make the most of them. If Dawn of War 4 doesn’t succeed and no one wants to make another game, I truly hope the series ends on a high note – a fitting conclusion for such an epic franchise.
