As a movie fan, it’s always disappointing when a film with all the right ingredients – a fantastic cast, a promising idea, and seemingly solid filmmaking – just doesn’t connect with audiences. You’d think a remake of a beloved classic would be a safe bet, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out. Take the recent dark comedy from Searchlight Pictures, released earlier this year. It had what I thought was one of the best ensemble casts of 2025, but it unfortunately didn’t do well in theaters and quickly disappeared. I’m glad it’s now coming to streaming, though! It deserves a second look, and hopefully more people will give it a chance now.
The Roses is a new version of the 1989 comedy The War of the Roses, which famously starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as a couple locked in a bitter divorce battle over their home. This remake is directed by Jay Roach and features Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman in the leading roles.
Just a couple of months after its theatrical release, where it earned over $51 million, the movie The Roses is coming to streaming. Disney announced today that it will be available exclusively on Hulu starting November 20th.
Similar to the movie it’s based on, The Roses centers around a divorcing couple determined to make each other’s lives as difficult as possible. Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman deliver fantastic performances, constantly trying to one-up each other in a conflict that becomes increasingly wild and chaotic.
While the two main actors in The Roses are excellent, the movie boasts a truly impressive cast overall – arguably one of the best since the Knives Out films. Alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, you’ll see hilarious performances from Saturday Night Live veterans Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon, plus fantastic supporting actors like Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Sunita Mani, Zoë Chao, and Jamie Demetriou.
