Over the last seventeen years, Marvel has released thirty-seven movies in its Cinematic Universe, and only three have received negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. While that’s generally a strong record, it’s notable that all three of those poorly-received films came out in the last four years, suggesting concerns about a dip in quality are likely valid. Two were sequels – Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Captain America: Brave New World – and the other, Eternals (released in 2021), introduced a new story to the MCU.
With a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Eternals ranks as one of the least well-received films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While some of the criticism the movie received was valid, a lot of it felt unfair or unhelpful. Kumail Nanjiani, who played Kingo in Eternals and later returned to the role in the Marvel’s What If…? animated series, was a frequent target of that negativity. He’s spoken before about how the film’s reception impacted him, and now he’s sharing his thoughts with his characteristic humor.
Kumail Nanjiani Gets Candid About Eternals Criticism

I just finished watching Kumail Nanjiani’s new comedy special, “Night Thoughts,” on Hulu, and it was great! He really went back to what made him funny, but also talked about what’s been happening with his career lately. He touched on how the reaction to that Eternals movie led him to start seeing a therapist. He didn’t even mention the movie’s name, but he did address the fan reaction to him talking about therapy, and honestly, he makes some really good points. I totally agree with everything he said.
In his comedy special, Kumail Nanjiani pointed out that when he revealed he was in therapy, he noticed people reacted in just a few ways. One common response was a dismissive comment about his movie Eternals, like, “So, your big Hollywood film flopped, and we’re supposed to sympathize?” This made him reflect on how people talked about both the movie itself and his part in it.
The comedian addressed the audience in Chicago, stating he didn’t want their pity, but allowed himself to feel disappointed. He explained that he’d spent a year working on a project he was really excited about, only to have it universally panned. To his surprise, he also became the target of ridicule for getting in shape. He wondered why he was being singled out, asking, ‘What changed the rules?’ and ‘Why didn’t anyone warn me?’ He emphasized the difficulty of the experience, revealing he hadn’t allowed himself to enjoy cake in years.
This segment marks the start of the conclusion to Nanjiani’s special, and it’s the first of five criticisms from fans that he tackles. It’s worth watching for fans interested in hearing his perspective, as it reveals how much he’s processed his feelings about the movie’s performance and highlights just how unreasonable some fan comments to actors can be.
