Please be aware that this article contains spoilers from the One Piece manga! The One Piece manga is currently revealing a key backstory about Rocks D. Xebec, his relationship with Blackbeard, and their family history. The story initially focuses on solving the mystery of King Harald’s murder, but quickly shifts to Xebec and his rise to notoriety as a pirate. Xebec became a target of the World Government long before the Rocks Pirates were even formed, after he attacked the Holy Land of Marijoa during the Reverie conference and killed an Admiral. After years of pursuit, the World Government discovered his weakness and managed to trap him.
It was common knowledge that the God Valley Incident was a carefully laid trap designed to eliminate Xebec, and he was forced to walk into it because his wife and young son were being held hostage. Things deteriorated rapidly on the island with the arrival of Imu, who used a strange ability called Domi Reversi to control Xebec like a puppet. The ensuing battle is one of the most heartbreaking in the series, showcasing both the bond between enemies and a hidden connection between Gol D. Roger and his son, Portgas D. Ace.
One Piece’s Roger and Ace Are Still the Most Tragic Father and Son Duo
It still gets me right here, even thinking about Ace. He came into the world right after his father, Roger, was executed, and honestly, he spent his whole life paying for a crime he didn’t commit. He carried so much anger towards Roger for it, which I totally get. He ended up finding a real family with Whitebeard and his crew – they were the father figures he desperately needed. But he constantly wrestled with whether he even deserved to exist. I truly believe he’d have lived with immense regret if it weren’t for the incredible bonds he formed with Luffy, Sabo, and the rest of the Whitebeard Pirates. Even though it’s been over ten years since his death in the manga, it remains the most devastating moment for me – and so many other fans, I’m sure.
It’s honestly heartbreaking that Roger never got to know how much he meant to his son, Ace. It’s incredible to think he even asked Garp to raise him! And it’s not just a coincidence that Ace was his name – Roger’s famous sword shared the same name, and we recently found out one of his strongest moves was called ‘God of Fire: Ace’! It’s amazing how that power, combined with Garp’s strength, ultimately defeated Xebec, which was exactly what Xebec wanted. You can really feel the deep connection between them, and Oda keeps dropping these little hints that there’s a whole lot more to their story than we’ve seen so far. It’s just so compelling!
