Even though CBS recently cancelled *The Late Show* in August, leaving his career and personal life in flux, Stephen Colbert appeared cheerful at the 2025 Emmy Awards (which we covered live). He and his wife, Evelyn McGee-Colbert, were smiling on the red carpet as they waited to find out if the show would win the award for Outstanding Talk Series.
The late-night host’s spouse was incredibly gracious during their E! red carpet interview, and those kind words felt even more special when the host’s *Late Show* team actually won an Emmy later that night, towards the end of the CBS broadcast (and on Paramount+ for subscribers).
When Zuri Hall asked her what she found most amazing about her husband’s achievements, here’s what she replied.
He’s an amazing leader, and he leads with genuine kindness. It’s like a family with around 200 people who all deeply care for each other. You really have to see how they operate behind the scenes to understand the special bond they share – they truly support one another. It’s a fantastic team.
Stephen Colbert isn’t just receiving support from his wife and team. After news of the show’s potential cancellation, he’s gotten an outpouring of encouragement from other late-night hosts like Jimmy Kimmel, and even former colleagues like Bob Odenkirk. When he appeared on stage to present the first Emmy award on Sunday, the audience gave him a huge cheer and a standing ovation – the first of the night.

Stephen Colbert Did Indeed Thank His Wife On Stage
When Bryan Cranston revealed that *The Late Show* had won Outstanding Talk Series, the audience erupted in cheers again. Stephen Colbert and the show’s staff then came onstage to celebrate, running a little over the time limit for acceptance speeches – but it didn’t end up mattering.
While sharing his appreciation, Colbert shared:
Personally, I want to thank my beautiful, brilliant wife Evie, who’s the brains of the outfit.
The host then warmly thanked his children, and McGee-Colbert was seen in the audience laughing and tearing up. It was a really sweet moment.
Although *The Late Show with Stephen Colbert* hadn’t won an Emmy before, it could potentially win again next year, even after its final episode aired on CBS. However, that would require its last season to be just as strong as the previous ones, and voters would need to focus on the show’s quality rather than its cancellation.
You can see how the latest episodes are doing by watching CBS from Monday to Thursday at 10:35 p.m. Eastern Time.
