After the Flood cast: Who stars in the ITV drama?

Season two of After the Flood brings us back to Waterside, where Jo is now a detective investigating a new, baffling murder. The town still faces the threat of flooding, and dangerous moorland fires add to the risk.

But that’s not the only challenge she must contend with.

All of this happens while still reeling from the revelations of last season. It was discovered that Mackie, who had become a father figure after her own dad passed away, was secretly a corrupt and murderous police officer – just like her biological father and her partner Pat, who had been accepting bribes for years.

If you need a refresher, we’ve broken that all down here in our handy ending explained.

In season two, Jo’s pursuit of a murderer puts her at odds with some of the town’s most powerful people, and the case quickly becomes very personal for her.

She’ll have to work undercover to expose the decades-long corruption that has infected the town’s police and even reached her own family – if she wants to succeed.

Sophie Rundle, who stars in After the Flood, explained that the second series doesn’t feel like a rushed addition. Instead, it feels like a natural continuation of the story, picking up right where they left off and moving forward.

As a movie buff, I gotta say, this series has introduced some really compelling characters in some wild situations. And honestly, after the first season wrapped up, I was super excited because it felt like there was so much more story to tell and so many directions they could take things.

Season 2 brings back several cast members alongside Rundle, and also introduces some new actors you might recognize – or not!

Sophie Rundle plays Jo Marshall

Jo Marshall is a newly qualified detective investigating a very puzzling murder. Her personal life is also in transition – she’s recently separated from Pat, and is currently living with her mother, Molly, while they both continue to raise their daughter, Eve, who is almost one year old.

According to Rundle, the series begins with Jo figuring out her position regarding Mackie and Pat, and processing the information she’s discovered. While things initially appear normal, it quickly becomes clear that she’s strategically planning to expose Mackie and gather evidence against him.

You probably recognize Sophie Rundle from her roles in popular shows like Peaky Blinders, Gentleman Jack, and Happy Valley. She’s also appeared in BBC thrillers The Nest and Bodyguard, as well as the historical drama Jamestown, and many other projects.

Lorraine Ashbourne plays Molly Marshall

Molly Marshall is Jo’s mother and currently a local councillor. According to Ashbourne, she’s become much more confident in the role and is a natural fit. Molly has a strong sense of community and always does what she believes is right, which gives her courage. Beyond her political life, she’s also dating Jack in season 2 and enjoys cold water swimming, revealing a different side to her personality.

You might recognize Lorraine Ashbourne from her roles in popular shows like Sherwood and Riot Women. She’s also appeared in Netflix’s Bridgerton, the second season of the ITV crime drama Unforgotten, the BBC comedy Alma’s Not Normal, and BBC One’s Playing the Field.

Matt Stokoe plays Pat Holman

Pat Holman is going through a tough time after his breakup. He’s heartbroken and still hopes to get back together with his ex-partner. He’s also focused on getting revenge on Mackie, wanting him to face consequences for his actions. However, this desire for payback is negatively impacting Pat’s personal life and work.

Many viewers are wondering where they recognize Matt Stokoe from. He’s actually married to actress Sophie Rundle, and they previously appeared together in the series Jamestown. He also recently played the role of Raoul Moat in a 2023 ITV drama focusing on the police hunt for him.

Nicholas Gleaves plays Sergeant Phil Mackie

Sergeant Phil Mackie faced a tough time at the end of the first season. However, about a year later, he’s regained his confidence and is now in a leadership position. He’s managed to hide his past actions, but will Jo uncover the truth in the new season?

You might recognize Nicholas Gleaves from roles in popular TV shows like Coronation Street, Scott & Bailey, and The Chase. He also appeared in the 2019 revival of The Demon Headmaster and Playing the Field.

Philip Glenister plays Jack

Jack is a property developer who suffered significant financial losses in the first season of the show. According to actor Glenister, Jack disappeared because his business ventures failed and he lost all his money. He’s now returning to address unresolved personal issues stemming from those earlier events.

You probably recognize Philip Glenister from his popular roles in the police dramas Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes. He’s also been in shows like Steeltown Murders, Belgravia, Mad Dogs, and Clocking Off.

Jill Halfpenny plays DS Sam Bradley

DS Sam Bradley is a new arrival to Waterside, having transferred from Newcastle. She’s a skilled and experienced detective specializing in murder investigations, and quickly forms a connection with Jo, recognizing a kindred spirit. Though highly competent, Sam is a stickler for the rules, which could lead to conflicts with Jo, who often relies on her instincts and isn’t afraid to bend them. Sam is a mother to two adult children but doesn’t currently have a work partner.

You might recognize Jill Halfpenny from her roles in popular shows like EastEnders and Byker Grove. She’s also appeared in Waterloo Road, Humans, Everything I Know About Love, and The Cuckoo, to name a few.

Alun Armstrong plays Alan Benson

Alan Benson is a very successful businessman and a major supporter of the town. He’s best known for quickly stepping in after last year’s floods and donating £10 million for the construction of a flood wall to protect Waterside. He lives on a large estate with extensive private moorland. Although he’s given a lot to the community, he’s also a somewhat divisive figure.

You probably recognize Alun Armstrong from shows like Breeders, Frontier, New Tricks, and Sherwood.

Steph De Whalley plays Harriet Benson

Harriet Benson is Alan’s daughter. She’s beginning to manage his affairs, but he finds it difficult to give up control.

Where have I seen Steph De Whalley before? She has appeared in Doctor Who and Midnight Taxi.

Ian Puleston-Davies plays Tony Rower

Tony Rower is a local councillor who has a strong working relationship with Molly. He, his daughter Donna, and his grandson Declan were forced to evacuate their home a year ago due to flooding, and they are finally able to move back now that repairs are complete.

You may recognize Ian Puleston-Davies from his roles in popular TV shows like Coronation Street, Tin Star, Pennyworth, DI Ray, The Responder, and The Bay.

Jacqueline Boatswain plays Sarah

Sarah is a newly elected Member of Parliament who is doing well in her political career, having left her previous life at Waterside. She’s confident and has a promising future, so she’s focused on moving forward and won’t dwell on the past.

Sarah previously had a romantic relationship with Jack, but it has now ended. She now needs to carefully consider what she wants to do with her relationship with Phil.

You might recognize Jacqueline Boatswain from her roles in the TV shows Hollyoaks and Grange Hill.

Faye McKeever plays Kelly

Kelly is Pat’s sister. After Jo moved out, Kelly moved in with her daughter. Her boyfriend, Keith, starts the season in jail because he was involved in an insurance fraud related to Jack’s farm equipment that was supposedly stolen last year.

Where have I seen Faye McKeever before? You might know her from Trollied, The Responder and Time.
