After Years of Rivalry, James Marsden Says Hugh Jackman Was Missed on Avengers: Doomsday Set (Exclusive)

It’s been twelve years since James Marsden last played Cyclops in a superhero movie, appearing briefly in X-Men: Days of Future Past after starring in the original X-Men trilogy. While Tye Sheridan took over the role in later films, Marsden is officially returning as Cyclops in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, as confirmed by sources and a recent trailer.

We recently spoke with James Marsden for his new Hulu movie, Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, and asked him about reprising his role as Cyclops in Avengers: Doomsday. He revealed he didn’t even need to see the script before agreeing to return, and that he really missed working with Hugh Jackman, who played Wolverine and was often his scene partner. When we asked if he enjoyed being Cyclops again without Jackman’s Wolverine challenging him, Marsden shared some interesting thoughts about Doomsday.

James Marsden Admits He Missed Hugh Jackman Filming Avengers 5

James Marsden shared his fondness for Hugh Jackman and the chemistry between their characters, Wolverine and Cyclops. He described their relationship as a playfully competitive, brotherly dynamic, where they often playfully annoyed each other. Marsden admitted he missed working with Jackman, saying it felt strange not having him around on set. He paused, carefully choosing his words, before simply stating that he did indeed miss Jackman’s presence.

Okay, so everyone’s buzzing about who’s going to be in Avengers: Doomsday, and it sounds like we’re definitely getting more Scott Summers – thankfully! It seems like Marsden’s coming back to play Cyclops, which is awesome. As for Hugh Jackman and Wolverine… well, he hasn’t said he’s not returning, but it’s still up in the air. What’s really interesting is that they seem to be giving Cyclops a whole new depth in this film – the teaser trailer showed him completely broken and screaming, which is a side of him we’ve never really seen before. Honestly, it’s already looking rough for him, and I can only imagine how much worse it would be if Wolverine was also giving him grief while he’s dealing with whatever cataclysmic event is happening!

Considering the unusual setup of Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice – a comedy about gangsters with a time travel twist – we asked Luke Marsden if he’d ever agreed to a project without first reading the script. He shared that he has, and it actually happened with Avengers: Doomsday.

I was so excited to hear Marsden talk about how he came back for Avengers: Doomsday! Apparently, it all started with a conversation about his role. He hadn’t even seen the script yet, but he was already on board! He basically said he immediately agreed – it was a definite ‘yes’ from him, which is amazing to hear as a fan!

You can watch Marsden in Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice on Hulu and Disney+ this Friday, March 27th. He’ll also be back in the X-Men universe this December with Avengers: Doomsday.
