The highly anticipated expansion for Age of Empires 4, titled “Dynasties of the East,” scheduled for release on November 4th, promises to deliver a wealth of fresh content, including new units, civilizations, and maps. Recently, details about one of the updates’ most intriguing features, called “The Crucible,” have been unveiled by the development team.
As a die-hard Age of Empires fan, I’m super excited about the upcoming changes in “The Crucible,” our series’ first roguelite mode! This new challenge promises an intense, customizable experience where we gamers must survive wave after wave of enemies, all while defending a wonder. From what I gather, The Crucible will offer a rich gaming experience with selectable bonuses, randomized encounters, and the chance to make progress that persists between each playthrough. Best part? This latest update is coming to both PC and consoles, thanks to the game’s release on Xbox a couple of years ago, and it’ll be available on PlayStation 5 starting November 4th! Can’t wait to give it a try!

The Crucible Looks Like It Will Add Hours of Fun
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel excited about the prospect of The Crucible offering a significant boost in replayability for Age enthusiasts like myself. With eight distinct difficulty levels to tackle and upgrades to unlock, it seems we’ll have plenty of opportunities to challenge ourselves and push our strategies to the limit. And if we manage to conquer the highest difficulties, we’ll even unlock a special “Conquerors Mode” – now that’s something worth striving for!
In this game, players are challenged to endure for 45 minutes amidst an escalating onslaught of enemies. As they manage to withstand longer, they are rewarded with medals and bonus points that can be used to buy permanent upgrades, enhancing their future gameplay. Players may opt to continue playing beyond the 45-minute mark in “Endless Mode” if they’re having an exceptional run they don’t wish to conclude. The main goal is safeguarding the wonder, but players will find optional tasks and points of interest scattered across the four confirmed maps for additional rewards within The Crucible scenarios.
As someone passionate about “Age of Empires” who has dabbled in variant maps and mods with similar atmospheres, I’m thrilled about the roguelite mode the team is developing, as advertised. The 45-minute time limit seems suitable for roguelike games, which are often more engaging when played in a single session to prevent them from feeling overly bloated towards the end. It’s also comforting to know that players can exit early and still receive rewards, reducing the impact of less successful runs that could otherwise seem like wasted time. The prospect of having an objective when I feel like playing a computer opponent game is particularly enticing, especially considering the continuous progression unlocks, which add to my excitement.
In roguelike/roguelite games, advancement that carries over between play sessions can be a topic of disagreement among its enthusiasts. Nevertheless, I personally don’t feel that someone who dislikes persistent progression is disadvantaged simply because it’s an option. If you’re not fond of this kind of system in a roguelike, you can opt out of it since the developers explicitly state that you can disable certain earned advantages if preferred.
How do you feel about the upcoming roguelite game mode in Age of Empires 4? This year has been quite rewarding for roguelites, with games like Elden Ring: Nightreign and smaller projects such as The King Is Watching and Astral Throne hitting the market. Having an official roguelite mode in Age of Empires feels like something I didn’t realize I was eagerly anticipating, but am thrilled to know it’s coming.
