During the 2010s, Marvel Television extended its presence on ABC through shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and its spin-off series, Agent Carter. The latter series, which followed Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell), continued after the storyline of Captain America: The First Avenger. Chad Michael Murray‘s character, S.S.R. Agent Jack Thompson, was a significant part of the supporting cast. Unfortunately, the series was terminated by the network in May 2016 following two seasons, leaving many plot threads unresolved. In an interview with ComicBook during the promotion of Freakier Friday, Murray shared his thoughts on what may have become of his character after the show’s surprising finale.
Murray clarified that telling something and assuming it are two entirely distinct matters when asked about the fate of Agent Thompson on Agent Carter. “Jack would have returned,” Murray stated, adding that he had imagined a different scenario for Season 3, where Jack would be confined to a hospital bed but still giving orders. He joked about Jack teasing Souza for not knowing his job well enough, even though Murray himself was immobile from the bed.
In this hypothetical season finale, Jack would have undergone a rite of passage. As Peggy and Jack were cornered, gunfire erupted, and to Murray’s vision, it was Jack in his hospital gown, calling out, “I knew you needed me.” This, according to Murray, is how he envisioned saying goodbye to Jack.
Murray’s vision offers a dramatic resolution for a character whose tale ended on a suspenseful precipice in the Season 2 finale. Situated in Los Angeles, the season culminated with Thompson planning to head back to the S.S.R. headquarters in New York City. However, before he could depart from his hotel, an enigmatic individual fired at him, stealing a classified document. This document had been passed on to him by his mentor, Vernon Masters (Kurtwood Smith), who was a top-tier member of the Council of Nine and had ties with the season’s antagonist, Whitney Frost (Wynn Everett). The content of the stolen file could have harmed Peggy Carter, and Thompson was gunned down before revealing his true motives concerning the document.
Is There Any Chance of Seeing Agent Carter Characters in the MCU Again?
Although Agent Carter ended in 2016, the current Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has demonstrated a pattern of wrapping up stories initiated from past television series. A tangible instance of this happened in 2020, four years post-cancellation of Agent Carter, when Daniel Sousa (played by Enver Gjokaj) reappeared for the last season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The storyline for that season revolved around the team journeying to 1955, where they found out that Sousa was destined historically to be killed by Hydra. To avoid this fate, the team fabricated his death and brought the authentic Sousa into the present day, thereby giving him a fulfilling new chapter in his storyline.
Marvel Studios has made it easier for these characters to return by fully incorporating them from previous Netflix shows into their main universe. This was confirmed with the March 2025 release of “Daredevil: Born Again” on Disney+, where Charlie Cox (as Matt Murdock) and Vincent D’Onofrio (as Wilson Fisk) continued their stories. Marvel has also announced that Krysten Ritter will reprise her role as Jessica Jones for the show’s second season. The enthusiasm from fans played a significant role in bringing these actors back, as their campaigns showed a strong audience interest that the studio recognized and addressed.
In a similar fashion, the concept might also work for the show “Agent Carter“. With the open-ended plot twists and a dedicated fanbase, there’s potential for a groundswell of support to persuade Marvel Studios to create a standalone Special Episode. This format would provide an ideal platform to unveil who murdered Jack Thompson and offer a satisfying ending to the beloved series, which was left incomplete.
Murray will be seen next in Freakier Friday, which hits theaters on Friday, August 8th.
