After almost ten years in development, a hugely ambitious action fantasy series from has finally arrived. The streaming service has had success with similar shows like The Witcher, Shadow & Bone, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, so early reviews will show if this latest project was worth the wait and investment for both the platform and its viewers.
After numerous setbacks – including on-set injuries, a lengthy post-production process, and pandemic-related delays – the action fantasy series, Agent from Above, finally premiered last week on April 2nd. Based on the first book of Teensy’s popular “The Oracle Comes” novel series, the show spent approximately seven years in development. Agent from Above uniquely combines Taiwanese folk beliefs with modern fantasy, telling the story of Han Chieh (Kai Ko), a spirit medium who must resolve supernatural problems as penance for a past mistake, all while serving the Third Crown Prince (Wang Po-chieh).

I’ve been reading reviews of Agent from Above, and honestly, the one from K-Waves & Beyond really stood out! They said it’s a pretty familiar mix of action and folklore, but it’s done with such style that it totally grabs your attention and keeps you watching. It sounds awesome!
Agent from Above blends action, mythology, and compelling characters into a truly engaging story. The series excels at creating an immersive world and developing interesting relationships, keeping you hooked from start to finish.
I really liked what Leisurebyte had to say about Agent from Above. They didn’t call it a revolutionary show, but they thought it was a genuinely fun and captivating watch, especially if you’re into supernatural action and stories rooted in folklore – which I definitely am! It sounds like exactly the kind of thing I’d enjoy.
Initial reactions to the show, beyond previews, have been somewhat underwhelming. Despite the effort put into it, some critics feel Agent from Above doesn’t quite live up to its potential. But Why Tho? called it “an enjoyable story” with a good mix of characters and storylines, but ultimately said it “Falls Short Of Greatness” and isn’t essential viewing. Decider suggests watching it rather than skipping it, but noted inconsistent tone despite a generally engaging mythology that sometimes successfully blends darker and lighter elements.
The review from DMTalkies was particularly critical, describing Agent from Above as a visually overloaded mix of Constantine and Taiwanese mythology. While acknowledging a few moments where the action and effects worked well, the review ultimately suggests viewers would have a better experience simply rewatching Constantine.
The acting in this show is consistently great – everyone, from the main stars like Kai Ko and Buffy Chen to even the briefest cameos, delivers a strong performance. Is it a good enough reason to check it out? Absolutely – or, if you’re looking for something similar, you might enjoy watching Constantine.
Agent from Above is now streaming on Netflix.
