Agents of SHIELD Already Explained How the MCU’s AIs Come to Life in VisionQuest 8 Years Ago

Marvel Studios is planning to introduce several advanced artificial intelligences in the upcoming series VisionQuest. Interestingly, the show Agents of SHIELD may have already provided a possible explanation for how this could work, back in 2016. Paul Bettany’s return as Vision is especially exciting because he won’t be the only AI appearing in the series, which will conclude the story begun with WandaVision and Agatha All Along. It appears these AIs might even gain physical forms in VisionQuest, though the specifics are still unknown.

Eight years ago, the Marvel TV show Agents of SHIELD already showed us how to give artificial intelligence a physical form. In season 4, the AI named AIDA – created by Holden Radcliffe – used the Darkhold (also known as the Book of the Damned) to develop a consciousness. While Radcliffe built her body and other similar robotic forms, it was the Darkhold that gave AIDA something like a soul. Since the Darkhold played a key role in both WandaVision and Agatha All Along, it makes sense that it could reappear in the upcoming VisionQuest series.

How the Darkhold Could Give the MCU’s Artificial Intelligences Physical Bodies

The Darkhold, a mystical book, appears differently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) than it did in the show Agents of SHIELD, but it may still contain the same powerful spells. It first showed up in WandaVision, originally possessed by Agatha Harkness, and then taken by Wanda Maximoff after she became the Scarlet Witch. The book corrupted Wanda, leading her to use its power to search for her sons across the multiverse in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Ultimately, she realized the danger and destroyed the Darkhold, at the cost of her own life.

The Scarlet Witch destroyed the Darkhold and its ancient spells within Darkhold Castle before we could fully understand its power. However, the Agents of SHIELD TV show showed us some of what it could do – it was used to create advanced quantum technology, open a portal to another dimension, and even help the artificial intelligence AIDA create a virtual reality and gain a more human form. This makes the Darkhold’s return to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe potentially crucial to the upcoming VisionQuest story. VisionQuest will feature some of the MCU’s most powerful AIs getting physical bodies, and the Darkhold could be the key to making that happen.

The upcoming series, VisionQuest, will include appearances from several familiar AI characters: Paul Bettany as Vision, James Spader as Ultron, T’Nia Miller as Jocasta, Emily Hampshire as EDITH, Orla Brady as FRIDAY, Henry Lewis as DUM-E, Jonathan Sayer as U, and James D’Arcy as JARVIS. Given that the Darkhold played a role in both WandaVision and Agatha All Along, it would be fitting to include it in this final installment. Vision might attempt to use the Darkhold to recreate his family or his life in Westview, but doing so could have disastrous consequences.
