Ahead of Renegades Launch, Destiny 2 Dev Explains New Approach to Expansions

Next week, on 2nd December, a new expansion pack for Destiny 2 arrives.

Renegades is a new game with strong influences from Star Wars, and its creators at Bungie are hoping it will help revitalize the sci-fi shooter franchise.

Initial indicators are positive – the expansion is currently a top five pre-order title on the PlayStation Store, meaning it’s gaining attention. However, the key question remains: will it be enough to attract players back to the game?

Destiny 2’s developers recently spoke with IGN about how they’re changing the way they create expansions for the game, starting with this year’s releases.

With The Final Shape, the long-running story of Destiny 2 reached its conclusion, and the subsequent expansion, Edge of Fate, started a new one. However, instead of attracting new players, Destiny 2 has seen a decline in its user base. This has left a core group of dedicated, but often very critical, players who have been with the game for a long time.

Here’s game director Tyson Green on The Edge of Fate:

We’ve learned a lot about what our players enjoy, and it’s clear there are two types of live games: those that actively respond to player feedback and those that don’t. We definitely want Destiny to thrive, not fade away. That’s why we’re paying attention to what our players are telling us: they’re not interested in just grinding for higher numbers; they want meaningful rewards.

Bungie has changed how it develops Destiny 2 to release two substantial expansions each year. This new process lets the team react faster to what players think and try out new concepts, and it seems like the recent ‘Renegades’ update is a good example of this improved approach.

As a long-time Destiny player, I’m really excited about how the new release schedule – two expansions a year – is letting the developers take bigger swings. What’s cool is they can really focus on trying new things within each one. They had this idea for a ‘space western’ revenge story, and they just went for it! They were totally inspired by Star Wars and built an entire expansion around that vibe, which is pretty much their process anyway. But this time, it feels even more focused and intentional, like they really leaned into the influences and style, while still keeping it undeniably Destiny.
