Ahsoka Tano has become one of the most popular characters in Star Wars. She began as a supporting role in the animated series Clone Wars and has since evolved into a hero deserving of her own stories. These stories now include novels, comics, animated shorts and episodes, and a live-action show with a second season planned. Ahsoka’s popularity comes not only from her compelling personality and impressive adventures, but also from her unique and cool weapons.
Ahsoka didn’t finish her Jedi training and instead chose a different path as a “Wayseeker.” Wayseekers focus on following the Force’s guidance directly, rather than obeying the Jedi Council. This independence is reflected in her signature weapons: a pair of white lightsabers, symbolizing her unique connection to the Force.
Star Wars Confirms The Official Names & Inspiration For Ahsoka Tano’s Lightsabers

With the release of the new book Star Wars: The Mandalorian Visual Guide before the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, fans have been taking a closer look at Ahsoka Tano. Her live-action debut in Season 2 of The Mandalorian finally showed her unique dual lightsabers in a realistic way. The design of these weapons, combined with the Eastern-inspired themes of the episode “Chapter 13: The Jedi,” strongly suggested that Ahsoka was using Katana-style lightsabers.
The Mandalorian Visual Guide backs up previous information and provides helpful details, as Star Wars guidebooks often do. It clarifies that Ahsoka Tano uses one standard “Katana Lightsaber” and a smaller “Shoto Lightsaber,” which is based on the traditional short-sword used by Samurai.
As a huge Ahsoka fan, I always loved learning about her lightsabers! Apparently, when she was Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan, he actually made a pair for her. He designed them to help her fight bigger opponents, giving her more reach and better protection. She’s kept using that double-bladed style ever since, even though those original lightsabers are lost to time. Now, her blades are a stunning, pure white because of special kyber crystals – they’re connected to who she is as a person, which is just so cool!

Fans will likely be thrilled to see the white kyber crystals resonate with Ahsoka’s connection to the natural world. Over time, Ahsoka Tano has become an increasingly beloved character, and with each new Star Wars story, we appreciate her choices even more. Looking back, the Jedi Council seems less insightful, while Ahsoka appears wiser for leaving before the Jedi Order fell. By the time we meet her as an adult, portrayed by Rosario Dawson, she embodies the skills and presence of a master samurai, now living as a lone wanderer – a journey explored in the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi animated series.
Confirming this detail about lightsaber history also clarifies the origins of Ahsoka Tano’s character, as envisioned by George Lucas. Calling her a ‘ronin’ – a wandering warrior – feels fitting, especially given her skill with a lightsaber.
Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2 is currently in development and will be released on Disney+.
