Actor A.J. LoCascio is presently marketing his debut book titled “Spoops: The Little Spirits of Halloween“, a children’s book that originated from Voltron fans. LoCascio, who voiced Prince Lotor in Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender from 2016 to 2018, leveraged this role for mainstream popularity. This year at San Diego Comic-Con, he showcased his book launch, among other projects. In a conversation with ComicBook, LoCascio revealed the unexpected tale of how Voltron fans propelled him into the realm of children’s publishing. “Spoops” can now be pre-ordered and will be available on shelves starting August 12th.
LoCascio shared that he enjoys Halloween and desired to create decorations for his apartment. However, since he resides in Los Angeles where it’s difficult to construct large items, he began creating small sculptures as personal pieces on his desk. He expressed his affection for pumpkins and everything related to Halloween, which sparked the idea. Later, the show Voltron gained popularity, and fans noticed these little figurines on his desk, asking where they could purchase them. Surprised by their interest, LoCascio admitted that he made them solely for himself.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I couldn’t resist the allure any longer or overlook the chance to express my affection for the enchanting Halloween atmosphere. Thus, I embarked on creating more, and here’s how it unfolded: “I learned the art of casting and working with resin – skills like those,” I admitted. “And surprisingly, it gained momentum all on its own.” At present, my Etsy shop stands bare, but the success of my Spoops over the past seven years speaks volumes.
LoCascio explained that these people live in an unusual private realm, and naturally, others ask, “What’s the backstory? What’s the legend?” He found himself compelled to document it, which led to the creation of his book, titled “Spoops.” This narrative revolves around a single night – Halloween – where the characters aid a young girl named Holly Hollowell, who is forbidden from celebrating Halloween due to her parents being anti-Halloween dentists.
As a child, one of my greatest fears was the possibility of missing out on Halloween trick-or-treating,” LoCascio admitted. “I used to worry about getting sick or something going wrong. To this day, I sometimes have nightmares about having missed Halloween. It’s a terrible scenario for a kid, so when I thought about her predicament and the Spoops stepping in to ensure she had a fun Halloween while following her parents’ guidelines, it seemed plausible.
After making a significant impact in the Voltron franchise, taking on a role in a children’s book might not be the most expected move, but for me and those joining me on this journey, it makes each page all the more unique and cherished. “Voltron: Legendary Defender” is now available for digital rental or purchase at PVOD stores. On Tuesday, August 12th, you can get your hands on “Spoops: The Little Spirits of Halloween” wherever children’s books are stocked.
