Back in March, Marvel Studios announced that Alan Cumming will reprise his role as Nightcrawler in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film. Fans are hopeful this return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe will finally give the character a costume that matches his comic book appearance. When 20th Century Fox produced the X-Men films, they often avoided faithfully recreating the characters’ costumes from the Marvel Comics. As a result, popular heroes like Cyclops, Wolverine, Jean Grey, and Storm never wore their iconic suits. Cumming first played Kurt Wagner’s Nightcrawler in the 2003 film X2: X-Men United, but even then, his costume wasn’t true to the comic book design.
In a surprising announcement at the end of March 2025, Marvel confirmed Alan Cumming will reprise his role as Nightcrawler in *Avengers: Doomsday*. He’ll be joined by other familiar faces from the *X-Men* movies – including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, and Channing Tatum. Fans are excited because Cumming’s character is finally expected to wear a comic book-accurate red-and-black suit. Nightcrawler has been known for his red and black suit in Marvel comics since he first appeared in 1975’s *Giant Size X-Men #1*. Fans will be excited to see Alan Cumming’s version of the character wear a suit that closely matches the comic book design in *Avengers: Doomsday*. He won’t be the only one getting an updated look, though – other actors returning from the *X-Men* movies are also expected to have new costumes. After years of differing designs, Marvel Studios seems poised to deliver the comic-accurate looks fans have been hoping for, as seen in recent films like *Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness*, *The Marvels*, and *Deadpool & Wolverine*.

While it’s not confirmed if Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool will be in *Avengers: Doomsday*, Marvel’s attention to detail with their new costumes gives fans hope that other returning X-Men characters will be treated with the same care. A recent leak showing some of the costumes from *Avengers: Doomsday* has only increased excitement for the upcoming sequel directed by the Russo brothers.
Fans can look forward to seeing classic X-Men looks in *Avengers: Doomsday*, including Cyclops in his blue and yellow suit, Magneto in his red robes, and Gambit sporting his comic-book accurate costume as seen in *Deadpool & Wolverine*. Mystique will also finally wear her iconic white outfit. This film promises to establish a new benchmark for the X-Men within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, continuing with the upcoming *X-Men* reboot directed by Jake Schreier.
