After the 2026 Oscar nominations were announced, I was eager to hear Alexander Skarsgård‘s reaction to his father, Stellan Skarsgård, being nominated for his role in Sentimental Value. Now, Alexander has finally shared his thoughts, and true to form, they’re funny and direct.
For a bit of context, this week, Stellan Skarsgård received his very first Oscar nomination. He was recognized for his work in Sentimental Value, and he was nominated alongside Frankenstein’s Jacob Elordi, Sinners’ Delroy Lindo, as well as One Battle After Another’s Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn. Considering Stellan’s long list of great movies, it’s a bit shocking that this is the first time he’s been recognized by The Academy. So, folks are celebrating. However, when the LA Times asked Alexander about his father’s big news, he simply said that he felt:
A little jealous. Good for him, I guess.
What really stands out is how casually they said it – it’s genuinely funny, and totally fits their personalities. Before the Oscar nominations were announced, both Alexander and Stellan playfully joked about going head-to-head during awards season. Alexander, the star of Pillion, even joked about starting a “huge negative campaign” against his father. They also playfully trash-talked each other about who deserved to win when they spoke with Actors on Actors.
Given that the True Blood actor famously told his father, “You’re going down, old man,” it’s not surprising—and is actually quite funny—that he reacted to the nomination like he did.
Alexander Skarsgård, known for his role as Murderbot, often makes witty and humorous comments about his family. For example, when his brother Bill Skarsgård starred in Nosferatu, Alexander was asked if Bill’s vampire was more attractive than his character in True Blood. He jokingly replied that Nosferatu was “pure sex,” then dryly added that Bill’s acting was “okay.”
The star of The Northman reacted to his father’s Oscar nomination in a way that’s perfectly fitting for his personality – it was genuinely funny.
I’m curious to see how he’ll respond if Stellan wins. He already won a Golden Globe in 2026 for his performance in Sentimental Value, and many believe he’s a strong contender for an Oscar as well. He might win another award at the Academy Awards, which will be broadcast on March 15th. We’ll just have to wait and see his reaction then.
You can check out the latest work from this father-son duo while you wait. Alexander has two new films coming out in 2026: The Moment arrives in theaters on January 30th, followed by Pillion on February 6th. And if you’d like to see Stellan’s award-nominated acting, Sentimental Value is now available to buy on YouTube.
