Despite receiving high praise from critics (a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes), Alexander Skarsgård’s action film didn’t perform well in theaters when it was released. Now, three years later, the movie is available to stream on Netflix. Skarsgård is known for his acclaimed roles in shows like Big Little Lies and True Blood, but this 2022 historical film—directed by Robert Eggers—is considered one of his strongest performances and has just been added to Netflix’s December lineup.
Robert Eggers’ latest film, The Northman, a violent Viking epic, became available on Netflix on December 3rd. It’s Eggers’ third feature, following The Witch and The Lighthouse, and stars Alexander Skarsgård as Prince Amleth – a character from Norse mythology who served as the basis for Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The film centers on Amleth’s exiled journey to avenge his father’s murder at the hands of his uncle. The movie boasts a strong cast including Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Gustav Lindh, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe.
Despite a thrilling story and positive reviews – even earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the movie didn’t do well financially, making only $69 million at the box office compared to its $70 million production cost.
The Northman Is the Underappreciated Epic Revenge Story You Need to See
Despite earning high praise from critics – with a 90% score and many calling it a visually stunning and epic revenge story – The Northman didn’t find a large audience in theaters. While it cost around $70 million to make, it only earned about $70 million at the box office, and viewers gave it a 64% rating. However, many consider The Northman to be a true masterpiece and a remarkable film.
This film is a powerfully raw and intense Viking revenge story, and arguably director Eggers’ finest work. He builds a stunning and realistic world through long, sweeping shots, incredible detail, and a dedication to historical accuracy, all amplified by a gripping musical score. While packed with brutal and expertly filmed action, it’s also a surprisingly deep exploration of characters, tackling themes of destiny, fate, and the endless repetition of violence. Alexander Skarsgård gives a particularly impressive and emotionally vulnerable performance as the central character, Amleth.
What’s New on Netflix?
December got a boost of new content on Netflix, including the epic film The Northman. On December 1st, they added several titles like Brightburn (James Gunn’s take on the Superman story), Godzilla, the first three Kung Fu Panda movies, and Quentin Tarantino’s classic Pulp Fiction. Plus, fans can now stream Troll 2, the sequel to the popular monster movie Troll.
