The thrilling series Alice in Borderland is coming back with a third season, and it will feature a completely new story that goes beyond the original manga.
The new season of the show moves away from the original manga storyline. It focuses on what happens after the meteorite strikes Tokyo. When Usagi (played by Tao Tsuchiya) is kidnapped by a strange researcher fascinated with the afterlife, Arisu (Kento Yamazaki) has to go back into the dangerous world of Borderland and compete in even more life-or-death games to rescue her.
Director Shinsuke Sato says the upcoming season of Alice in Borderland will explore new territory, but fans can still expect the intense story and thrilling action that defined the show’s earlier seasons.
He explained that the new season will feature even more unpredictable and thrilling challenges. Fans who loved the first two seasons are in for a treat, as season 3 truly captures the essence of what ‘Alice in Borderland’ is all about.

Much of the appeal of *Alice in Borderland* stems from the dangerous games the characters play, which create genuine stakes as they try to escape the mysterious Borderland.
Kento Yamazaki, the actor who plays Arisu, says the new season has an original story, but also includes some thrilling elements taken directly from Haro Aso’s manga.
Season 3 features some incredibly intense games that weren’t shown in the first two seasons, drawing from content originally found in the source material. The creator also developed some brand new games specifically for the show, adding to the deeply psychological and immersive experience that fits perfectly within this world.
Okay, so season 3 really digs into Usagi’s backstory, and honestly, it’s heartbreaking. A huge part of her journey revolves around her trying to process the death of her father, something she never really dealt with before entering this strange world. It’s clear that unresolved grief is a major motivator for her, and she’s hoping to find some kind of closure – or answers – within the Borderland itself. It’s a powerful emotional core to the season.
According to Tao Tsuchiya, the first two seasons of the show focused on the main character, Usagi, learning to deal with and understand the people around her and the challenges she faced. However, season three shifts the focus inward, with Usagi confronting her own personal issues and undergoing self-discovery.
You know, a lot of people might look at her and think she’s fragile, but I disagree completely. To me, her biggest strength is her determination to build a real family with Arisu. It’s like she *knows* she has to face her past hurts and work through her trauma before she can truly be the person – and the family member – she wants to be. It’s a really powerful arc, honestly.

The show revealed at the end of season 2 that the Borderland is actually a shared mental space created by people who almost died during the Tokyo meteorite event.
Those who enter the Borderland lose their memories, retaining only vague recollections of having played “games.”
The disaster deeply affected Arisu and Usagi, and its emotional consequences will continue to shape their journeys throughout season 3.
According to Sato, Arisu has lost his memories of everything that occurred in Borderland, but he does remember almost dying.
Facing death made him truly appreciate life. In the first season, Arisu felt lost and without purpose, but by the third season, he’d found meaning through connections with others and a sense of belonging. Experiencing the nearness of death ultimately helped him learn how to live.
