Alien Earth Creator Already Knows How It Ends (Even if It Takes 5 Seasons)

Noah Hawley, the brain behind FX’s eagerly awaited series Alien: Earth, has disclosed fresh details about his grand plan for the storyline. In the latest edition of Empire Magazine, when quizzed on speculations of a five-year roadmap for the show, Hawley shared his approach to storytelling for this venture, revealing he has a definitive end goal in sight. This revelation marks an exciting turn for the franchise’s inaugural TV series, as it shifts the iconic horror from confined spaceship settings to the expansive terrain of our home planet. Given the grand scale of the new series, which centers around the aftermath of a devastating alien epidemic, a well-structured, long-term strategy is crucial for narrative effectiveness.

Hawley clarified that while he doesn’t outline each detail step-by-step, he does have an overall direction for the series. He posed the question: “If you don’t know where it’s going, how can you understand what it is?” This approach gives the series two guarantees: a fixed objective to maintain focus and a flexible structure to accommodate television production challenges like shorter seasons without compromising on a satisfying ending.

Hawley’s strategy needs to factor in a crisis that surpasses in complexity any event depicted in the Alien movies. The plot of Alien: Earth begins when a Weyland-Yutani research ship crashes, releasing five distinct types of aggressive alien species. Matters become even more intricate with the arrival of Prodigy Corporation, a merciless rival company to Weyland-Yutani, who view the disaster as a chance, deploying soldiers to collect biological samples. The confluence of a massive alien infestation and corporate ambition sets the stage for the vast narrative landscape that Hawley aims to navigate.

Who Are the New Players in Alien: Earth?

The story centers around Wendy (Sydney Chandler), an advanced synthetic being with a blended human consciousness, developed by Prodigy Corporation under the guidance of their eccentric CEO Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin). As suggested in the trailers, there’s a complex father-daughter dynamic between them that drives Wendy to willingly collect samples from the wreckage of the Weylan-Yutani spaceship.

In a tight-knit group, Wendy is encompassed by synthetic companions who function as her surrogate family. Among them are Timothy Olyphant portraying Kirsh, a synthetic guide and guardian for Wendy, and David Rysdahl as Wendell, a synthetic character serving as her brother. They are accompanied by other synthetics whose names are reminiscent of the Lost Boys from Peter Pan, such as Kit Young as Tootles and Adarsh Gourav as Slightly.

In this conflict, essential characters hailing from various groups portray the human aspect. Alex Lawther embodies a soldier character named CJ, who serves as the main human lead. He is depicted as an idealist striving to make right choices amidst the turmoil. Lastly, Sandra Yi Sencindiver will bring to life a high-ranking executive from Prodigy’s adversary, Weyland-Yutani. Her role will help enrich the backstory of the corporation that is prominently featured across the Alien series.

The premiere of the series titled “Alien: Earth” will take place on Tuesday, August 12th, and can be watched on both FX and Hulu.
