For almost half a century, the Alien franchise has been a significant part of science fiction horror genre, thanks to its famous Xenomorph creature that left an indelible mark on cinema. Now, the creator Noah Hawley is planning to broaden this universe with Alien: Earth, which will be the first live-action TV series for the franchise. This new story shifts the focus to our planet, exploring the devastating aftermath when a Weyland-Yutani research ship crashes and releases its horrifying cargo. But humanity won’t only have to contend with the Xenomorph; the series will also introduce several dangerous and predatory alien species. Recently, ComicBook had an opportunity to speak with the cast and crew of Alien: Earth at Comic-Con, where Hawley shared that the classic monster is about to face some formidable competition.
Hawley responded to the question about whether xenomorphs remain the scariest creatures in Alien: Earth by saying it depends on personal preferences. He admitted that our new creations are indeed terrifying, but he feels the xenomorphs still hold an edge due to their versatility. They evoke fear at different stages – from the egg, facehugger, and chest burster phases. The xenomorphs, in his opinion, offer something for everyone.
In the year 2120, Earth is under the control of five massive corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic, and Threshold. When a Weyland-Yutani spacecraft crashes into Prodigy City, it sets free a host of baffling life forms that are more horrifying than anyone could have anticipated. This incident thrusts the main character, a novel type of hybrid humanoid robot named Wendy (Sydney Chandler), right into the midst of the turmoil. The arrival of several alien threats significantly alters the survival-horror dynamic of the series, transforming a localized outbreak into a possible global ecological disaster as different creatures fight for supremacy.
Hwlaey explained to us, ‘You’re introducing these creatures into our native habitats.’ He added, ‘By doing so, you’re placing an apex predator within another well-balanced ecosystem. I can’t wait to observe the consequences. The last preview gave us a hint of this with the striking image of the xenomorph in a cave system. It evoked a strong, gut-level reaction, making it seem as though they’ve invaded our planet.’
Everything We Know About Alien: Earth
The series “Alien: Earth” sets the stage for Earth to construct a vast world extending beyond the initial alien danger. It presents a society where people, cyborgs, and synthetics coexist, with technology playing a significant role in shaping its hierarchy. The main conflict revolves around Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin), the prodigious Founder and CEO of Prodigy Corporation, who develops a form of immortality using hybrid beings – humanoid robots imbued with human consciousness. This innovation fuels intense corporate competition that mirrors historical rivalries such as the race for electricity between Edison, Tesla, and Westinghouse. Every major player is eager to control humanity’s future, making the alien outbreak a chance for merciless entities to gain power and technology. Hawley aims to delve into the ethical abomination of human cruelty towards each other, a theme that has been present since the initial films.
In the show “Alien: Earth,” we’ll encounter a variety of characters as they navigate this lethal new environment. At its heart is Wendy, an initial hybrid prototype, who has a complex father-daughter bond with her creator. She is safeguarded by a makeshift family of artificial beings, such as her tutor Kirsh (Timothy Olyphant) and her surrogate brother Wendell (David Rysdahl). On the human front, Alex Lawther portrays CJ, a soldier embodying the working-class spirit of the original series, finding himself in a system he can’t control. In place of the notorious Weyland-Yutani corporation, we have Babou Ceesay as Morrow, a multifaceted cyborg with a rich past and allegiances torn between the company that rescued him and symbolizes a ruthless corporate entity.
Alien: Earth premieres on FX on August 12th.
