Alien: Earth Season 2 Cancellation Now More Disappointing Than Ever

Even though Alien: Earth hasn’t been officially canceled, the lack of a season 2 renewal is becoming more concerning. The first season received excellent reviews (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) and ended with a cliffhanger that hinted at a bigger story, but Disney and FX still haven’t announced whether or not the show will continue. Fans are still waiting for updates about season 2.

Fans of Alien: Earth would be upset to hear it’s been canceled, no matter when that news came. The show has a compelling story and expands the Alien universe in interesting ways. However, a cancellation now, more than a month after the first season finished, would be particularly frustrating given the upcoming Predator movie.

Predator: Badlands’ Success Continues The Alien & Predator Renaissance

The worlds of Alien and Predator have been connected for years. While the 2004 Alien vs. Predator movie isn’t considered official continuity anymore, the two series still share a universe. Recent Predator films even include direct mentions of Weyland-Yutani, the powerful corporation and villain from the Alien movies, further solidifying this link.

Both the Alien and Predator franchises are enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Alien: Romulus breathed new life into the Alien series after the mixed reception of Alien: Covenant, and 2022’s Prey did the same for Predator. Now, Predator is experiencing another boost with Predator: Badlands, which is off to a strong start. Early projections estimate Badlands will earn around $30 million in theaters, and it currently has a very positive audience score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The success of Badlands proves that both the Predator and Alien franchises are experiencing a major revival, performing better with both critics and audiences than they have in years. Looking at the last films released before Disney’s acquisition in 2019, the improvement is clear. Alien: Covenant received a 65% approval rating from critics and 55% from audiences, while 2018’s The Predator only managed 34% and 32%, respectively.

Every Alien And Predator Project Released By Disney Has Thrived So Far

After Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, gaining the rights to both the Alien and Predator franchises, both series have seen successful releases. Alien’s Romulus was a box office success, earning $350 million and receiving over 80% positive reviews. Predator’s Prey also impressed critics, achieving a 94% approval rating despite being released directly on streaming.

Disney’s success with the Alien and Predator franchises is really taking off. Similarly, Alien: Earth drew 9.2 million viewers for its premiere and also received a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

It would be disappointing if the recent positive turn for the Alien franchise ended with the cancellation of Alien: Earth, particularly after the success of the latest Predator film. If Earth doesn’t get a second season, it would be the first Alien project since Covenant to not fully succeed. Canceling the show would mean losing all the progress the franchise has made under Disney’s leadership.

With Predator: Badlands, Disney has clearly demonstrated its skill in handling both the Alien and Predator franchises. The success of these projects under Disney’s ownership is undeniable, and a second season of Alien: Earth would likely perform just as well. Canceling the show now would be particularly disappointing, given the potential that’s being lost.

Alien: Earth’s Contribution To The Franchise Shouldn’t End With Season 1

Whether you enjoyed it or not, the show Alien: Earth has a lot of potential and deserved a chance to expand the Alien universe. It’s a great fit because it’s a prequel set on Earth, giving us an unprecedented look at the Weyland-Yutani corporation. It could also fill in important details and gaps in the overall Alien story, enriching the existing timeline and the original film.

As a huge sci-fi fan, I’m really hoping Alien: Earth gets another season. It felt like the first season was just the beginning of something much bigger, and there’s so much more to explore with those five companies and their fight for control – and what they’re really after with the whole immortality thing. Plus, the show has already given us some fascinating details about the Xenomorphs themselves, and I’m dying to see them expand on that. It really feels like there’s a lot more story to tell.

There’s a possibility that future seasons of Alien: Earth could introduce a crossover with the Predator franchise. The show already includes a synthetic human created by the Weyland-Yutani corporation, and it’s proven willing to expand the Alien universe with new creatures. This could pave the way for the Yautja (Predators) to join the story. However, a successful crossover depends on Alien: Earth getting the opportunity to build the foundation for it.

Even if you weren’t completely satisfied with the first season of Alien: Earth, there’s still a good reason to hope for a second. While the show wasn’t perfect – some felt it tried to cover too much ground – another season would allow it to improve and really find its footing. If Disney renews it, Alien: Earth season 2 has the potential to be even stronger than the first.
