Alien: Earth’s Rotten Tomatoes Score Confirms the End of an Era for the Franchise

Earth could redefine what we thought was achievable within this iconic franchise.

Since the release of “Alien: Romulus” this year, along with last year’s installment, the Alien franchise has once again received positive critical acclaim. This is welcome news for longtime fans of the series, but it also signals that the 2010s chapter of this franchise has come to an end. With “Romulus” being a box office success and “Alien: Earth” receiving rave reviews, the era of Alien prequels centered around “Prometheus/Alien: Covenant” is officially concluded.

What Was The Alien Prequel Era of Storytelling?

Covenant” were aimed at expanding the Alien universe by providing explanations for unanswered questions, including the identity of the mysterious “space jockey” character and the origins of the Xenomorphs.

Scott publicly stated his wish to continue creating ‘Alien’ sequels following ‘Covenant’. As recently as fall 2017, it was disclosed by former CEO of 20th Century Fox, Stacey Snider, that the studio was highly enthusiastic about producing a follow-up to ‘Covenant’. This announcement came only two months before Disney declared its plans to acquire News Corp.’s entertainment entities, such as 20th Century Fox. With this takeover, a new chapter for ‘Alien’ was imminent. Now, under Disney and the newly named 20th Century Studios, there was great excitement about entrusting the franchise to fresh creative minds like Fede Alvarez and Hawley.

Moving forward, titles within this series no longer revisit the historical timeframes depicted in the two Scott films from the 2010s. Instead, “Romulus” picks up right where the original “Alien” left off. Consequently, instead of focusing on the past, the “Alien” franchise is now more interested in creating fresh recurring characters to propel this series into the future. As a result, the intricacies of “Alien” lore are temporarily set aside. Thus, the era of “Prometheus” and “Covenant” has concluded officially.

The Alien Saga Has Prestige Again

Earth and Alien: Romulus, have been met with more positive critical responses compared to the Alien vs. Predator films and the 90s sequels. Even Ridley Scott’s later Alien films, although they have dedicated fan bases, didn’t receive the same level of initial acclaim as these new entries. Essentially, it seems we’re witnessing a new era in the way Alien stories are received by both critics and audiences.

As new chapters for the Alien series unfold, including potential sequels to Romulus and Alien vs. Predator, as well as Earth-based seasons, there’s an abundance of exciting projects on the horizon. With these upcoming installments, the days of Prometheus and Covenant will become increasingly distant memories. While Ridley Scott may revisit some elements from those stories featuring Michael Fassbender’s androids and the Engineers, it appears that the franchise is now focusing on fresh narratives to enthrall a new generation of fans.

As a die-hard Alien fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation in the air. The news that Ridley Scott is stepping away from his creative role in the franchise signals a new chapter for this iconic series. With the director of the original masterpiece no longer set to guide future installments, it feels like we’re standing on the precipice of a bold and exciting new era for the Alien universe. The glowing reviews for Alien: Earth are just the beginning – a tantalizing taste of what’s to come as we embark on this radical departure from the plans for the Alien saga in the 2010s. It’s an exhilarating time to be a fan!
