Fede Álvarez has an explanation as to why he’s not directing Alien: Romulus 2.
The new movie *Alien: Romulus*, released in US cinemas in 2024 by 20th Century Studios, takes place between the stories of the original *Alien* (1979) and *Aliens* (1986). It’s directed by Fede Álvarez and stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, and Isabela Merced.
A follow-up to the film *Alien: Romulus* is being developed, but director Fede Álvarez won’t be returning to direct it.
What did Fede Álvarez say about Alien: Romulus 2?
Fede Álvarez doesn’t believe he was ever intended to direct a sequel to ‘Alien: Romulus’. He explained at HorrorHound Weekend, as reported by Epic Film Guys Jeremy, that the plan always seemed to be for a single director to come in, make one film, and move on – a pattern he admires in filmmakers like James Cameron, David Fincher, and the original director, Ridley Scott, who he acknowledges has earned the right to revisit the franchise multiple times.
Honestly, we really wanted to write this story ourselves. It’s mostly because we’re so attached to the characters we developed – we just didn’t want to see anyone off them right away in the next installment! When we saw what happened with Hicks and Newt, it really bothered us, and we thought, ‘Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen to *our* characters.’ So, we wrote it to protect them and keep them safe, and now we’re happy to pass the story on to someone else.
The director shared with TooFab that he’s currently working on a personal project he and his writing partner have been developing for some time. However, Jeff Sneider recently suggested on his podcast, The Hot Mic, that creative disagreements might be the real reason he’s no longer directing the Alien: Romulus sequel.
Currently, there’s no director for Alien: Romulus 2, and a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
