Alien’s Most Divisive Movie Finally Gets a Sequel Update After 8 Years

In more casual language: The Alien series saw a comeback in this decade with movies like Alien: Romulus and Alien: Earth. But it was Ridley Scott who revived the franchise earlier with two prequel films – Prometheus and Alien: Covenant – that came out in the 2010s. These films expanded the universe by delving into the origins of the xenomorph and raising deep philosophical questions, although they were divisive when they first came out. However, some critics have since reconsidered Prometheus, appreciating Scott’s intentions. As for plans for a third prequel leading up to the original film, Scott recently shared an update on that project.

In an article for The Guardian, Scott addressed a collection of fan queries. One question was regarding the progress of Gladiator 3 and the possibility of another Alien prequel. According to him, Gladiator is currently in development. Regarding another Alien prequel, if a good idea arises, he would definitely consider it.

Could Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant Sequel Ever Happen?

The lack of a sequel to “Alien: Covenant” can be attributed to its mixed reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it scored 65%, which is the lowest in the series, and it made $238.5 million globally. Despite this being the third-highest grossing film in the series (not accounting for inflation), it still represented a decrease in profits compared to its predecessor, “Prometheus,” which earned $402.4 million worldwide. The divided reactions to “Prometheus” may have dampened audience interest in the “Alien” franchise, contributing to the lower box office returns for “Covenant.”

The movie titled “Romulus” raked in an impressive $350.8 million globally, making it a standout success. Many spectators viewed “Romulus” as a rejuvenation for the franchise, taking it back to its core horror elements. Compared to Scott’s prequels that delved into profound existential questions, “Romulus” served more as a nostalgic throwback, focusing on a band of characters battling for survival. Meanwhile, the television series “Alien: Earth” has garnered favorable remarks due to its chilling atmosphere and fearsome creature aesthetics.

A sequel to the film “Alien: Romulus” is being worked on, but its release date hasn’t been announced yet. Whether Ridley Scott’s third prequel will happen depends on Disney/20th Century Studio’s decisions about the franchise in the future. Since the films “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant” split audiences, the studio might not be eager to continue that series. However, given the recent positive reception of the “Alien” series, the higher-ups might prefer to keep things going in that direction. Although some plot threads from “Covenant” are still unresolved, there appears to be more enthusiasm about continuing where “Romulus” left off.

According to Scott’s remarks, it seems like an additional Alien movie isn’t currently at the top of his priorities. He mentioned that he would consider creating another one if an idea strikes him, suggesting there might not be a fully developed script ready for production yet. With numerous projects occupying Scott’s time, such as working on a third Gladiator, it remains to be seen whether he’ll revisit space for the Alien franchise. Should he come up with a new prequel, it would certainly be exciting, but there’s a possibility that the series may have already moved in a different direction.
