The Batman Family is a huge and well-known group of superheroes. Despite Batman’s image as a loner, he’s consistently worked with partners since the very beginning, starting with Robin less than a year into his crime-fighting career. Over time, the Bat-Family has expanded significantly. While the exact number of members varies – some say around twelve, others claim over thirty – it’s clear there are many. What they all share, however, is the potential to become serious dangers if they were to go rogue.
Today, we’re going to rank the members of the Bat-Family based on how dangerous they’d be if they turned to the dark side. It’s tricky defining exactly who is in the Bat-Family, so we’re focusing on those who consistently work with the group, and excluding anyone with unclear or past connections. That means you won’t see characters like Harold Allnut or Orpheus, or newer heroes like Jace Fox Batman. I’ve put together a list of twenty entries, aiming for a balanced overview.
Okay, so I’m not trying to figure out who would win in a straight-up fight here. I’m thinking about who would be the most terrifying if they turned bad – who could do the most damage. I’ve been considering a ton of stuff – their fighting skills, how smart they are strategically, what resources they have access to, the gear they use, everything. So, let’s get into it – here’s my ranking of the Bat-Family, based on how dangerous they could be if they went rogue.
20) Ace and the Bat-Pets

Ace the Bat-Hound is absolutely part of the Bat-Family, even appearing as a main character in the original Batman Family comic book and frequently featured with the group. If we’re including Ace, it’s fair to include all of Batman’s animal companions – from Jerry the dog to Bat-Cow. To keep things simple, I’ve grouped all these “Bat-Pets” together. While they’re incredibly well-trained – and in Goliath’s case, a powerful fighter – they are still animals, and that’s why they earn a place on the list, but are ranked last.
19) Jim Gordon

Even though Jim doesn’t know – or won’t find out – the secret identities of Batman’s allies, he’s a hugely important member of the team. He connects them to the legal system and is likely the only police officer Gotham City trusts. Jim is a genuinely good person who’s repeatedly shown he can handle himself in a fight and is an excellent marksman. While he isn’t the world’s greatest detective, he’s certainly capable. He’s someone you definitely don’t want to cross, but compared to the rest of the Bat-Family, he’s relatively ordinary.
18) Alfred Pennyworth

Although Alfred has passed away, he was the heart of our family. Beyond being an incredible cook and possessing extensive medical knowledge, he had a remarkable past. He served in the British army and was even part of the highly classified Nemesis Program under MI-5, where he was trained as an enhanced soldier – almost like a super-powered Batman. Even in retirement, he remained a skilled marksman and fighter. He wasn’t a crime fighter, but Alfred could definitely handle himself in a fight when necessary.
17) Bluebird

As a critic, I’ve been following Harper Row, and she’s a really interesting addition to the Bat-Family. She’s stepped back a bit to focus on college, but don’t let that fool you – she jumps back into the hero game when needed. While she might not be the most polished fighter, she’s definitely capable, but where Harper really shines is her intellect. This girl is a genuine engineering prodigy. We’re talking everything from building impressive weapons to actually improving the Batmobile! She’s so sharp, she can even hold her own solving mysteries alongside Tim Drake, who, let’s face it, is the Family’s top detective. Harper’s skills are incredible, but in a universe as dangerous as DC, being brilliant isn’t always enough to make you a truly formidable force.
16) Huntress

Huntress is a bit of an outlier here because she doesn’t really stand out with any exceptional abilities. While she’s a skilled fighter and detective with unwavering determination, her only truly unique talent is her proficiency with the crossbow. I don’t want to diminish her accomplishments, but compared to the others on this list, she doesn’t bring anything they can’t also do – and in some cases, they do it better.
15) Azrael

Let me tell you, Jean-Paul Valley is scary. This guy wasn’t just trained, he was built to be a weapon. From the moment he was born, the Order of St. Dumas molded him into the perfect assassin, and that gave him insane fighting skills and a relentless focus. They even messed with his DNA, mixing in animal genes to make him physically stronger than most. Remember when he took over as Batman? It was brutal – a really violent, take-no-prisoners approach to justice in Gotham. He’s a serious threat, no doubt, but I noticed something… he’s not without a weakness. It’s a big one, too.
Jean-Paul’s training left him with serious mental health issues. While it made him strong, it also made him incredibly fragile and prone to breaking down under stress. It’s clear that enough pressure will push him over the edge. A prime example of this is when Bruce Wayne reclaimed the Batman role – not through a physical fight, but by psychologically convincing Jean-Paul that Bruce was the rightful Batman, which destroyed his motivation to continue fighting.
14) Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn has tried to be a hero, but it’s easy to remember how dangerous she was as the Joker’s partner. Even from the beginning, during the “No Man’s Land” comics, Poison Ivy gave her resistance to toxins and increased strength. Harley is a skilled fighter, but she really shines with her incredible acrobatics and unpredictable personality. This can be a problem, though, because even she doesn’t always know what she’ll do next.
What truly makes Harley Quinn a threat is her relationship with Poison Ivy. Ivy is consistently one of Batman’s most formidable enemies, and she’s fiercely loyal to Harley. While Swamp Thing has even greater control over plant life, Ivy can manipulate plants with incredible power, even once taking over the entire world using them and pheromones. However, like the others, she’s always been stopped, which limits how much protection she can ultimately offer Harley.
13) Catwoman

Selina Kyle, known as Catwoman, is a frequent criminal, but she’s no ordinary thief. She’s been a vital ally to Batman and his team for years, going back at least to the ‘Hush’ storyline. While she’s a skilled fighter, Catwoman truly excels at stealth and stealing. She wouldn’t likely win in a direct fight against others on this list, but she could easily defeat them by stealing something incredibly valuable and powerful. Many consider Selina the best thief in the DC Universe, and her connections to the Bat-Family, the criminal underworld, and Batman’s enemies give her the knowledge to find and steal even the most dangerous artifacts.
12) Signal

As a huge Bat-Family fan, I’m really excited about Duke Thomas. He’s such a fresh addition, and what makes him unique is that he’s the first one with actual superpowers! Even before he became a hero, you could tell he was incredibly smart – he was cracking Riddler’s puzzles back in “Zero Year,” and he actually figured out Batman’s secret identity all by himself! That’s seriously impressive. He then led the ‘We Are Robin’ group, which caught the attention of the whole Bat-Family and earned him a spot among them. After a year of training with Bruce, he developed the ability to control light – photokinesis – which is just a fantastic power and makes him a really dynamic hero.
Signal has a wide range of abilities, including invisibility and X-ray vision, all of which have become more powerful since he learned to control shadows. Combined with his inherent talent, Duke’s command over light and darkness makes him a formidable opponent. Despite this, he’s still relatively new and doesn’t have the same level of experience as others, placing him somewhere in the middle of the power rankings.
11) Batwing

Luke Fox is a remarkably versatile hero. As the son of Lucius Fox, a trusted ally of Batman, he’s inherited a sharp mind for business and technology. Luke is also a highly skilled martial artist, particularly in boxing, and an engineer who rivals or even surpasses Harper Row in expertise. He’s best known for creating the Batwing armor – a powerful suit similar to Iron Man’s, providing him with enhanced strength, the ability to fly, forcefields, and a vast array of weaponry.
Batman saw potential in Duke and, when the original Batwing stepped down, chose Luke to take over as the Batman of Africa under the Batman Incorporated banner. Luke was Batman’s first pick for the role. While Luke now concentrates on his work, he still fights crime when necessary. Combined with his advanced, Batman Beyond-inspired suit, he’s a formidable opponent and definitely someone you don’t want to cross in Gotham.
10) Stephanie Brown

Stephanie Brown, once known as Spoiler, is now one of the Batgirls and has proven herself to be a formidable hero. She’s received top-tier training from experts like Batman and Cassandra Cain, making her an exceptional fighter. She’s also a skilled puzzle-solver, a talent she developed while trying to stop her villainous father, the Cluemaster. But Stephanie’s biggest advantage is that people often underestimate her.
I’ve noticed something about Steph – it feels like she constantly has to prove herself within the Bat-Family, and maybe her dad’s villainous past doesn’t help. People just don’t always take her as seriously as they do the others. But honestly, she doesn’t seem bothered by it at all! She actually uses it to her advantage. She’s always thinking about how to get ahead, and she’s not afraid to play dirty or use anything she can to win. I mean, who could forget her first fight with Tim? He paused, and she literally hit him with a brick! That sums her up – she’s tough, clever, and incredibly resourceful.
9) Ghost-Maker

Ghost-Maker is a recent member of the Bat-Family, and he’s a bit of an enigma. He journeyed the globe and received training identical to Bruce Wayne’s early years. The two men were both friends and competitors, constantly pushing each other to improve. Ghost-Maker possesses a similar skillset to Batman, though Batman seems to have a slight edge – Bruce has never lost to Ghost-Maker since they were young adults.
Ghost-Maker is incredibly dangerous because he’s a true psychopath – he feels no empathy or fear and commits to fighting crime purely for his own twisted enjoyment. After years of training, he became a global threat to criminals, eliminating major figures that law enforcement couldn’t or wouldn’t handle. Essentially, he’s a Batman-like figure, but without a moral compass, and that should be frightening to everyone.
8) Batwoman

Kate Kane, Batman’s cousin, ultimately embraced a life of heroism, though her journey was unique. Like Batman, she received rigorous military training at West Point and spent three years traveling the world. She’s a highly skilled fighter and shooter, but also brings a sharp, strategic military mindset to the Bat-Family. As the wealthy heir to the Kane family fortune, she has the resources to fund her crime-fighting and has developed her own sophisticated weaponry.
7) Red Hood

Jason Todd followed Dick Grayson as Robin, and after being brought back to life, he became a uniquely dangerous force. As Robin, he received top-tier training from Batman and proved to be a naturally skilled, though often forceful, fighter. He’s the most accurate shooter in the Batman Family, regularly using firearms, and is also a highly proficient swordsman. After his resurrection, Jason received further training from the League of Assassins, adding to his already extensive skillset.
In the story “Under the Red Hood,” Red Hood quickly demonstrated his power by seizing control of Gotham’s criminal underworld in just a few weeks. He’s repeatedly become a major crime boss, but his time as a villain and anti-hero also revealed that he isn’t as skilled a fighter or strategist as other members of the Bat-Family. While Jason is certainly dangerous, he isn’t the most formidable threat out there.
6) Tim Drake

Tim Drake is the third person to take on the role of Robin, and many consider him the most skilled. Each Robin brings something unique to the part, and Tim excels as a detective – he’s the smartest and most observant of the group. He consistently finds clues and follows leads that others miss, and even figures like Batman and Ra’s al Ghul believe he has the potential to become even greater than Bruce Wayne, or may have already achieved that level. While his combat skills are on par with the rest of the Bat-Family, Tim is particularly skilled with the bo-staff. However, his greatest strength is undoubtedly his intelligence.
Tim isn’t the strongest fighter, but he’s an incredibly skilled strategist, always planning several steps ahead – especially when facing a powerful opponent. He’s proven this time and again, like when he defeated Lady Shiva by sending her poisoned chocolates before she even arrived. In fact, his planning could even exceed Bruce Wayne’s, if Tim allowed himself to become more ruthless. Almost every scenario where Tim becomes Batman shows him eventually becoming a powerful, and often tyrannical, leader.
5) Damian Wayne

Damian, the fifth Robin, was destined to be an incredible fighter from the moment he was conceived. As the son of Batman and Talia al Ghul, he was genetically engineered for peak physical condition. He received deadly combat training from the League of Assassins practically from infancy, later refined by Batman himself. Damian’s relentless ambition fuels a dangerous personality. What truly sets him apart, beyond his skills and family history, is his potential inheritance of the League of Assassins. He could, at any time, become its leader and command a vast network of highly skilled assassins.
Currently, Damian’s main limitation is his youth. As the youngest member of the Bat-Family, he’s already incredibly skilled and has improved dramatically, but he still needs time to fully develop his potential. He’s already a formidable fighter, but to become truly the best, he needs that final push to take him to the next level.
4) Cassandra Cain

Cass Cain is the second Batgirl and widely considered the most skilled fighter in the Bat-Family. Some even believe she’s the best in the world, with only a few martial artists like Black Canary, Bronze Tiger, and Richard Dragon possibly matching her skill. From birth, she was trained by her father, David Cain, to be a perfect assassin. Uniquely, she wasn’t taught to rely on spoken language, but instead learned to ‘read’ people through their body language, allowing her to anticipate her opponents’ actions with incredible accuracy. No one understands combat or can decipher people’s true intentions better than Cass.
Okay, so Cass is scary up close, but honestly, her mom, Lady Shiva, is what really makes her a huge threat. If Cass ever lost control, you just know Shiva would be right there with her. Both of them could take on a ton of the best fighters in the world, no problem! Together, they’d be practically unbeatable, unless you’re talking about someone with real superpowers. But, even though Cass is amazing, she just misses my top three because the fighters I have left can cause damage on a much bigger, wider scale. It’s close though!
3) Barbara Gordon

Barbara Gordon, the original Batgirl, is incredibly intelligent – and that’s what truly makes her a force to be reckoned with. While she’s a skilled fighter, her intellect and computer skills are unmatched, even within the famously smart Bat-Family. As Oracle, she became a vital source of information for heroes across the DC Universe, able to find anything, hack any system, and uncover any secret. She essentially connected everyone in the heroic community.
If Barbara ever decided to use her incredible tech abilities for malicious purposes, the consequences could be devastating. Because nearly everything relies on technology today, she’d have the power to disrupt essential systems and create widespread chaos – all from the comfort of her own home. She could inflict immense damage without ever physically leaving her location.
2) Batman

It’s clear Batman is a force to be reckoned with. Known as the Dark Knight and the Caped Crusader, he rescued Gotham City from despair and set it on a path toward improvement. He’s studied with the world’s leading experts in countless disciplines and become a master of them all. While others might be better than him at individual skills, almost no one possesses his incredibly diverse range of talents and resources.
Beyond all of that, Bruce Wayne is incredibly distrustful and has meticulously planned ways to defeat the world’s most powerful heroes. While these plans are designed to only incapacitate, as demonstrated by villains like The Batman Who Laughs and Ra’s al Ghul, they could easily be modified to be fatal. Batman has previously created Brother Eye, an AI capable of tracking every metahuman on Earth, and built armor allowing him to fight opponents as strong as Darkseid or the entire Justice League. Despite being one of the most formidable people ever, he isn’t who we consider the biggest threat.
1) Nightwing

Dick Grayson possesses all of Batman’s skills and abilities, and adds his own unique talents to the mix. He adapted to the role of Robin effortlessly, quickly becoming a natural. Beyond matching Batman’s combat prowess, he’s a world-class acrobat, a skill he honed before even reaching his teens. He’s not only been trained by the best, but has also trained many others, establishing himself as one of the most dependable heroes in the DC Universe. While people rely on Batman, they have a deep, inherent trust in Nightwing, and that trust is what truly makes him a formidable force.
Nightwing is just as capable as Batman, and thanks to a large inheritance from Alfred – over a billion dollars – he has significant resources of his own. He’s also incredibly well-respected and trusted among heroes, even more so than Superman. While some heroes work with Batman but maintain a distance due to personal issues, almost no one questions Nightwing’s motives. This makes him uniquely dangerous: he could secretly undermine the entire hero community without raising suspicion, as explored in the story DC Versus Vampires. Ultimately, Nightwing is arguably the most dangerous person around.
Here’s a ranking of the Bat-Family, based on how dangerous each member could be if they wanted to. With the Bat-Family always growing, this list is likely to change over time. Do you agree with our ranking, or do you think someone else deserves to be considered the biggest threat?
