The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel, similar to the first film, is a treat for Nintendo fans, filled with familiar characters, levels, music, and references. It prominently features beloved characters from across decades of games, and is packed with surprising cameos and hidden details. You could pause the movie at almost any moment and play a game of ‘spot the reference’ because it’s brimming with content. While the movie mainly serves as a showcase for the games, it also hints at potential future stories.
Like most modern Hollywood blockbusters, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is clearly designed to launch a larger franchise. The film sets up a sequel, and even hints at multiple future movies based on other Nintendo properties – potentially creating a whole cinematic universe. While fans are hoping for a Super Smash Bros. movie, that isn’t directly confirmed in the current setup, though it’s likely a possibility for the future. There are three potential follow-up films hinted at in the movie. Be warned: spoilers will follow.
3) Star Fox

When Nintendo announced Fox McCloud would be in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, many fans immediately thought a Super Smash Bros. movie was on the way. While that’s likely true eventually, the new movie suggests a Star Fox film will probably happen first, before any Smash Bros. crossover movie gets made.
The movie introduces Fox McCloud by showing his history and hobbies – including his famous barrel rolls. We also learn his teammates, Peppy, Falco, and Slippy, are all still alive and fighting with him to defend the Lylat system. However, the introduction doesn’t reveal anything about the villain Andross, leaving open the possibility that the movie’s story could end up mirroring the plot of the game Star Fox 64.
The main concern with the teased Star Fox movie, following the style seen in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is the visual approach. The flashback sequence featuring Fox is noticeably different – a vibrant, anime-inspired scene that feels distinct from the rest of the film. While visually exciting, it’s hard to picture Illumination using this style throughout an entire movie, as it doesn’t really fit their usual aesthetic.
2) Super Mario 3

Honestly, after seeing The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it’s pretty obvious they’re already planning a third film! They cleverly set things up by rebuilding Princess Peach’s castle and revealing a secret family connection between her and Rosalina. Plus, the movie hints at what’s next for Bowser and Bowser Jr. – Bowser is now rocking a spooky “Dry Bowser” look, and they’re both behind bars! And just like they did with Yoshi in the first movie, the post-credit scene introduces Princess Daisy, hinting she’ll play a major role in the next installment, probably as big as Yoshi’s role in this one. I’m already excited!
Okay, so a third Super Mario movie is definitely on the horizon, but the big question is: what will they call it? The last one drew a lot of inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy, so whatever comes next needs to feel equally epic. I’m really hoping they go with something based on Super Mario Odyssey or even Super Mario Wonder – those titles just feel like a big-screen adventure. Honestly, The Super Mario World Movie feels a little… underwhelming in comparison. We’ll have to wait and see, but the title is a crucial piece of the puzzle!
1) Donkey Kong

Shortly after The Super Mario Bros. Movie came out, rumors started circulating that Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong would star in his own spin-off film. While there’s been a lot of talk, a concrete project hasn’t been officially announced, although Universal has copyrighted something called “Untitled Donkey Kong Project.” Donkey Kong did make a very brief appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and it’s unclear whether this was just a fun nod to fans or a hint at the potential spin-off movie.
During a quick scene where Yoshi explains his past – which mostly consists of aimlessly exploring New York City – he visits various locations while The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize” plays. The scene also briefly shows Donkey Kong causing chaos, a nod to the original Donkey Kong video game, as he moves through city platforms and throws barrels. This likely serves as an Easter egg referencing his first appearance, or it could hint at a future Donkey Kong game that will explain how he arrived on Earth.
We’re just guessing, but with Donkey Kong having a small role in the movie and so many hints about future Nintendo films, it feels like this could be the start of a larger connected universe.
