All 5 Actors Who Played Scotty in Star Trek

Star Trek boasts many unforgettable characters, but Montgomery “Scotty” Scott is one of the most popular. As the Enterprise’s chief engineer in the original series, Scotty became a key part of the Star Trek universe, instantly recognizable for his Scottish accent and impressive technical abilities.

Scotty, first made famous by James Doohan, has continued to appear throughout the Star Trek universe, played by several different actors in both live-action shows and animated series. While no one can truly replace the original, each actor has added their own unique touch to the beloved character. Here’s a look at the five actors who have portrayed Scotty.

5) Carlos Alazraqui (Star Trek: Very Short Treks)

Star Trek: Very Short Treks is a collection of animated shorts created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek: The Animated Series. Released in 2023, the five episodes are brief – lasting between two and five minutes each – and aren’t considered official parts of the Star Trek storyline, but they do include characters from throughout the franchise. One episode, “Walk, Don’t Run,” turned a celebration of the original animated series into a lively musical performance, with Carlos Alazraqui voicing Scotty. The episode also featured Noel Wells as D’Vana Tendi, Cristina Milizia as M’Ress, George Takei as Hikaru Sulu, and Jonathan Frakes as William Riker.

4) Matthew Wolf (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds)

Though Scotty didn’t fully appear on screen in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds until the last episode of season 2, fans may be surprised to learn he actually appeared in season 1 – as a voice only. Actor Matthew Wolf voiced the character of “Engineer” in the episode “A Quality of Mercy,” and even included a line referencing classic Star Trek (“I’m not a miracle worker”). While Wolf wasn’t initially credited as Scotty, the show’s producers later confirmed that was indeed the character, offering a fun, subtle nod to longtime fans.

3) Martin Quinn (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds)

When Scotty finally appeared in Strange New Worlds, it was played by actor Martin Quinn – and notably, he was the first actor to portray the famous Scottish character who was actually from Scotland himself. The show establishes that Pike’s Enterprise crew finds Quinn’s Scotty among survivors of a Gorn attack. He had previously worked on a solar research vessel named the Stardriver. This adds an interesting layer to Scotty’s backstory, and having a Scottish actor in the role brings a fresh depth to the character.

2) Simon Pegg

Simon Pegg’s performance as Scotty in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek films is widely recognized, and it’s quite a departure from the original character. Pegg’s Scotty has a more comedic edge, which creates a contrast with the more stoic and understated version played by James Doohan. These differences are also due to the fact that Pegg’s portrayal exists within the alternate “Kelvin Timeline,” separate from the traditional Star Trek universe.

1) James Doohan

James Doohan, the original actor who played Scotty, appeared in many different Star Trek productions. He was in the original TV series and six Star Trek movies – The Motion Picture, The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock, The Voyage Home, The Final Frontier, and The Undiscovered Country, as well as Generations. Beyond that, he provided Scotty’s voice for several Star Trek video games and made a guest appearance on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Archival footage of Doohan as Scotty was also used in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and he voiced the character in Star Trek: The Animated Series. Remarkably, Doohan even appeared as Scotty again in 2022 – seventeen years after his passing.

Using previously recorded audio, James Doohan was able to reprise his role as Scotty in the first season of Star Trek: Prodigy, specifically in the episode “Kobayashi.” In that episode, Dal uses a holodeck to take the Starfleet captaincy exam, the Kobayashi Maru, which includes a simulation featuring well-known Starfleet officers—including Doohan’s iconic Scotty. It was a touching tribute to both the character and the actor who brought him to life.
