All 5 Nicolas Cage Comic Book Movie and TV Show Characters, Ranked

Nicolas Cage is known for being a uniquely versatile actor in Hollywood. Throughout his career, he’s excelled in serious dramas, thrilling action films, and surprisingly funny scenes that are now iconic. Even when his choices have been controversial, the best of his work consistently showcases his talent, establishing him as one of his generation’s most gifted performers. He’s appeared in nearly every film genre, and as a longtime comic book enthusiast, he’s also starred in several adaptations of comic book stories.

Nicolas Cage recently revisited his role as Spider-Noir, the character he voiced in the Spider-Verse films, for a live-action project. Throughout his career, he’s taken on various roles in comic book adaptations. This look focuses on Cage’s performance in these roles and how effectively his characters were utilized, rather than judging the overall quality of the movies or shows themselves.

5) Superman (The Flash)

Nicolas Cage’s brief appearance as Superman in The Flash was arguably his weakest superhero role. While it was meant as a nod to his unreleased Superman Lives movie, the visual effect was simply comical. The cameo felt pointless to the story and looked quite bad. If he’d gotten to fully play Superman as originally intended, it might have been better, but as a short, strange appearance in the DC Universe, it’s easily his worst comic book portrayal.

4) Dr Tenma (Astro Boy)

I remember when they announced an Astro Boy movie – everyone thought it was a sure thing! But the 2009 film really didn’t live up to expectations, and critics weren’t impressed, nor were moviegoers. Nicolas Cage actually voiced Dr. Tenma, Astro’s creator in the original manga, and he’s a really interesting character – initially rejecting Astro, but eventually coming to terms with him. Honestly, though, I felt like Cage’s talent was a little wasted in the role. It just didn’t stand out compared to some of his other, more memorable performances in comic book adaptations.

3) Big Daddy (Kick-Ass)

I was completely blown away by Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy in Kick-Ass. While the movies weren’t exactly the same as the comics, his performance really stuck with me. He played this ex-cop turned incredibly violent crime fighter who’d raised his daughter to be just like him. It was so funny, and I loved how he seemed to take inspiration from the old Adam West Batman – it made Big Daddy such a unique and quirky character. Honestly, my biggest complaint is that we didn’t get to see enough of him! I genuinely think a whole series focused on Big Daddy would have been amazing.

2) Ghost Rider

Despite being labeled a bad Marvel character by some, Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of Ghost Rider is actually quite good. He makes a few unusual acting choices throughout the two movies, but the character is surprisingly complex and has a compelling backstory. Even though the films didn’t fully showcase his potential, Johnny Blaze remains one of Cage’s stronger performances in a comic book role when you look at it separately.

1) Spider-Man Noir (Spider-Noir)

Nicolas Cage is now playing Spider-Noir in a new comic book role. He portrays Ben Reilly, a 1930s New York private investigator who secretly fights crime as The Spider. This role is a great fit for Cage, allowing him to showcase his signature acting style while also nodding to classic film noir. He truly brings the character to life, and his performance is a key reason why Spider-Noir is so compelling.
