Albus Dumbledore is a central and powerful figure in the Harry Potter series. Right from the beginning of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, he’s shown to be incredibly intelligent, though also a bit quirky. J.K. Rowling developed Dumbledore throughout the books, revealing him to be not only a kind headmaster, but also a brilliant strategist with a complex past and hidden depths.
Dumbledore is a fascinating character – both wise and playful, strong yet with hidden weaknesses, and ultimately, very human. Because of this complexity, different actors have portrayed him in unique ways on screen. Each performer has brought their own interpretation to the role, emphasizing a different side of Dumbledore’s personality and making the character even more compelling.
Honourable Mentions – Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie

Stephen Fry was the first to portray Dumbledore, though it was through narration – he voiced all the characters in the Harry Potter audiobooks starting in 1999. More than 25 years later, Hugh Laurie, known for his role in House and as Stephen Fry’s friend and Blackadder colleague, also joined the ranks of Dumbledore actors. He now narrates the character in a full-cast Audible recording of the entire seven-book series.
1) Richard Harris

Richard Harris was the first actor to play Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films, appearing in Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets. He created a memorable portrayal of the character, perfectly capturing Dumbledore’s unique personality. Harris brought a calm, playful, and grandfatherly quality to the role, with a gentle voice and twinkling eyes – and a few funny lines, like his famous “Alas… earwax.” His gentle approach fit the magical and wondrous tone of Harry’s early adventures. Sadly, Harris passed away in 2002, but his performance as the humorous and peaceful early Dumbledore remains beloved by fans and continues to be enjoyed in the first two films, which are still watched by millions each year.
2) Michael Gambon

Following Richard Harris’s passing, Michael Gambon took over the role of Dumbledore, starting with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He brought a new, but equally important, interpretation to the character. Gambon’s Dumbledore was more rugged and forceful, with a sense of urgency that grew as the films became more intense. While he could still be charming and playful, it’s difficult to picture some of the darker scenes – like the fight with Voldemort at the Ministry of Magic or the cave sequence in Half-Blood Prince – with anyone else. He also gave us the popular “Dumbledore asked calmly” meme, despite his delivery in Goblet of Fire being anything but calm. From the middle of the series onward, Gambon skillfully portrayed Dumbledore’s mysterious power, the weight of his leadership during the war, and the complicated nature of his past and present.
3) Toby Regbo

You know, it’s funny—when you think of actors who’ve played young Dumbledore, Toby Regbo probably isn’t the first name that comes to mind. But as a big Harry Potter fan, I recently learned he actually had a tiny, uncredited role as young Albus in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1! It was just a quick flash in a photo, but technically made him the third actor to portray Dumbledore in the original films. He came back for more in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and while his scenes weren’t huge, they were the first real look we’d ever gotten at Dumbledore’s younger years – a glimpse of him as an idealistic young man. It’s a neat little bit of Potter history!
4) Jude Law

Jude Law plays a younger Albus Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts films, Crimes of Grindelwald and Secrets of Dumbledore, showing a more complicated side of the character. His portrayal focuses on a time when Dumbledore is conflicted and secretive, subtly influencing events while avoiding a direct confrontation with Gellert Grindelwald due to a magical agreement. Law’s Dumbledore is charismatic, witty, and still haunted by past experiences. While the Fantastic Beasts movies have received mixed reactions from Harry Potter fans, Law’s performance has been widely praised for bringing depth and charm to Dumbledore’s early life, showing how he evolved into the wise leader we know from the original series.
5) John Lithgow

John Lithgow is the latest actor to join the cast of the upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO Max, and he’ll be playing Albus Dumbledore. Some fans initially questioned the casting since Lithgow isn’t British, but most are thrilled with the choice, recognizing him as a highly skilled and respected actor. Throughout his extensive career, he’s given memorable performances in shows like The Crown and 3rd Rock from the Sun, the series Dexter, the recent Oscar-winning film Conclave, and countless other successful projects. Lithgow’s ability to portray both kindness and strength makes him a promising choice to capture the nuanced character of Dumbledore as presented in the books. Because the new series plans to closely follow the novels, his interpretation of the wizard could be the most detailed and authentic we’ve seen… if he can master the accent.
