As a cinephile, I’ve noticed how contemporary cinematic universes are just as reliant on television screenings as they are on theater premieres. DC Studios is wholeheartedly adopting this approach under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Their vision encompasses a comprehensive lineup of live-action and animated series for HBO Max, which will serve as the sturdy foundation for the revamped DC Universe. These shows are not mere side attractions; they are pivotal components of the primary “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters” narrative, seamlessly intertwining with the films to enrich the world in dimensions a movie alone cannot.
The upcoming television series will delve deep into every nook and cranny of the new DC Universe, unraveling cosmic enigmas, grounded political intrigue, and even high-spirited comedies. These productions offer characters the space to evolve, cultivate intricate mythologies, and narrate tales that contribute significantly to the grand narrative that begins with Superman.
This list will zero in on the main DCU television productions, setting them apart from titles like “The Penguin” (completed) and ongoing series such as “My Adventures with Superman” and “Batman: Caped Crusader”, along with future projects like “Starfire” and “DC Super Powers”, which belong to different storylines. Here’s a list of all the DCU TV shows scheduled for release following “Superman”. This should give you a clear idea of the DCU television content that falls under the same continuity.
1) Peacemaker Season 2
The upcoming second season of “Peacemaker” resumes the tale of Christopher Smith, portrayed by John Cena, and unfolds after the events depicted in the “Superman” movie. This sequel is scheduled to air on August 21, 2025, and it presents a drastically altered scenario for our anti-hero due to a leap over several years. In this new setup, Amanda Waller has been replaced as ARGUS leader by Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo. He utilizes ARGUS’s resources to track down Peacemaker, seeking retribution for the loss of his son.
In the upcoming second season of “Peacemaker,” we’ll delve deeper into science fiction territory, featuring a gadget known as the Quantum Unfolding Chamber that enables travel across various realities. This narrative twist introduces a fresh take on Peacemaker’s antagonistic father, the White Dragon (portrayed by Robert Patrick), who appears in new armor and a heroic counterpart of Peacemaker joins forces with his living brother. The fusion of a personal revenge storyline and cosmic multiverse journeys is set to substantially enrich the mythology of the DC Universe.
2) Lanterns
In the heart of “Chapter 1” of the captivating saga, Lanterns, I find myself immersed in a significant live-action production destined for HBO Max. This series promises to spotlight two renowned members of the Green Lantern Corps – veteran Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and newcomer John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). The narrative unfolds as an expansive, earthbound mystery, where we follow these Lanterns as they unearth a sinister conspiracy. Their investigation not only sets a pivotal course but also carries profound implications for the entire DC Universe, seamlessly intertwining with the central narratives of the films and other series.
The series titled “Lanterns” is penned by renowned comic book author Tom King, with Chris Mundy (known for his work in “Ozark”) taking on the role of showrunner. In addition to this, Nathan Fillion returns as Guy Gardner, while Ulrich Thomsen assumes the character of Sinestro. It’s been rumored that Paul Ben-Victor may portray a character whose traits align heavily with the villain Atrocitus from the Red Lanterns.
3) Waller
In an exciting turn of events, I’m thrilled to share that a live-action series focusing on the formidable Amanda Waller is currently in development. The remarkable Viola Davis has agreed to return to her emblematic role, continuing to captivate us with her portrayal. This gripping series is being crafted by Christal Henry, who gave us the thought-provoking world of ‘Watchmen’, and Jeremy Carver, creator of the intriguing ‘Doom Patrol’. The series was unveiled as part of the initial “Chapter 1” lineup.
After losing her powerful position as head of ARGUS following the events of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1 and ‘Creature Commandos’, the story is expected to delve into Waller’s journey, offering a fresh perspective on her character. I can hardly wait to see how this unfolds!
The development of Waller has been challenging due to the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes necessitating major revisions that rendered its initial concept outdated. Contrary to speculation that the series had been terminated, Gunn himself verified on social media in June 2025 that Waller is still under active development. The initiative remains in the process of scriptwriting without a specified release date, yet it’s confirmed as part of the DCU’s upcoming plans.
4) Paradise Lost
Delving into the shrouded past and political machinations of the Amazons, Paradise Lost is a live-action prequel series that unfolds on Themyscira before the arrival of Wonder Woman. Similar in theme to Game of Thrones, this show highlights the power struggles, treacheries, and hidden histories among the immortal women on the island. The series intends to unearth the intricate roots of Amazonian society, exposing the moral dilemmas that lie beneath the idyllic facade of their paradise.
In the first phase, the series titled “Paradise Lost” is planned to establish the mythological background for Wonder Woman’s people prior to her official appearance in the DC Universe. The series is currently under script development, with no confirmed cast or showrunner as yet. However, its potential for a character-focused political drama sets it apart as one of the distinctive shows within the DC Universe lineup.
5) Booster Gold
An action-packed comedy television show, centered around the beloved character Booster Gold, is currently being worked on at DC Studios. This series will delve into the tale of Mike Carter, a former football star from the future who finds himself in hot water when he takes technology and a time machine from the future to join our present. His intention is to pose as a renowned superhero, aiming to acquire the popularity and wealth he desires. However, this journey will make him grapple with a strong feeling of being an imposter, or someone who feels they don’t deserve their position. As Gunn puts it, the project promises to be a deep exploration of a “charming underdog.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the progress on the Booster Gold project is robustly advancing. Previously, we had a showrunner who unfortunately lost interest in the project and departed. However, I can confirm that the studio has adapted (pivoted) and is now pushing forward with a new team. At this moment, the project remains in the development phase, without any confirmed cast, creative team, or release date revealed yet.
6) Blue Beetle
A cartoon show focusing on Jaime Reyes, aka Blue Beetle, has been greenlit for streaming on Max. This storyline will carry forward from the 2023 live-action film featuring the same title, although it’s important to note that this movie is not connected to the fresh DCU. However, director James Gunn has confirmed that Xolo Maridueña’s portrayal of Blue Beetle in the film serves as the first official hero in his new universe, and Maridueña will reprise his role as the voice for the character in the animated series. The show is expected to expand upon the film’s base, possibly delving into the post-credit scene hinting at Ted Kord’s return.
The Blue Beetle is being led by director and showrunner Miguel Puga (The Casagrandes) and writer Cristian Martinez (Good Trouble). In February 2025, Maridueña announced that the series was aiming for a release in 2026. By choosing to tell Jaime’s tale through animation, DC Studios can broaden his universe without the immediate limitations of live-action filmmaking, and they can selectively incorporate aspects from the previous movie into the new narrative continuity.
7) Creature Commandos Season 2
In January 2025, the premiere season of the animated series “Creature Commandos” marked the beginning of the latest DC Universe (DCU). Created entirely by James Gunn, this show unveiled a covert squad of monstrous characters assembled by Amanda Waller. Notably, the voice cast for these characters includes actors like Frank Grillo and David Harbour who are set to reprise their roles in live-action. The series’ debut was met with widespread acclaim from both critics and fans, resulting in a confirmation for a second season in December 2024, even before the conclusion of Season 1.
Gunn himself announced that he’s currently penning the second season, with the writers working diligently to develop the plot. In this upcoming season, we can expect a fresh team setup headed by The Bride and joined by King Shark; however, specifics are being tightly guarded. It seems DC Studios is pushing this project ahead at a rapid pace, but as of now, there’s no set release date.
8) Mister Miracle
A cartoon series for mature audiences, featuring the character Mister Miracle from the New Gods, was officially unveiled at the Annecy Animation Festival in June 2025. This show will be an adaptation of the Eisner Award-winning comic book series written by Tom King and illustrated by Mitch Gerads, which offers a gritty portrayal of the skilled escape artist, Scott Free. The narrative revolves around Scott and his wife, Big Barda, as they negotiate their existence on Earth amidst a conflict between their native planets New Genesis and Apokolips, with Darkseid in pursuit of the Anti-Life Equation.
At the moment, the series titled “Mister Miracle” is being developed by Warner Bros. Animation. Following the announcement of “Creature Commandos“, this becomes the second adult animated production under the DC Studios umbrella. However, it remains undecided whether this show will tie into the broader DC Universe (DCU) or be an Elseworlds project, although speculations point towards it being part of the primary storyline. As of now, no voice cast or release date has been revealed.
