All 9 DC Characters Confirmed for the Supergirl Movie, Ranked by Power

The latest trailer for the Supergirl movie gives us a better look at the plot, including details about the villains, who’s fighting whom, and what Supergirl is trying to achieve. It also confirms nine characters from the DC Comics universe will be in the film. While not all were major players in the comics, they all have a role to play in the movie, particularly in Kara’s mission to help a young girl and her dog, Krypto.

Here’s a rundown of the nine DC Comics characters confirmed to be in Supergirl, listed from most to least powerful.

9) Elias Knoll (Unnamed in the Comics)

Elias Knoll is Ruthye Marye Knoll’s father and the catalyst for her quest for revenge. Interestingly, the comic books Supergirl is based on – written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely – never actually gave him a name. He was simply known as ‘her father.’ In the comics, he bravely opposed Krem of the Yellow Hills, which ultimately led to his death. Though not a powerful figure, he was a courageous man who defended his people and stood by his principles. Actor Ferdinand Kingsley, known for his role in Reacher, portrays Elias Knoll in the Supergirl series.

8) Alura In-Ze

Alura In-Ze is the mother of Kara (Supergirl) in both the DC comic books and the Supergirl movie and TV series. The character has been portrayed by several actresses, including Mia Farrow in the 1984 Supergirl film and Erica Durance on The CW’s Supergirl television show. Emily Beecham will play Alura in the new Supergirl movie. Alura first appeared in DC Comics in 1959, in Action Comics #252. As a Kryptonian, she comes from Argo City, which comic book storylines reveal was intentionally kept away from a yellow sun to prevent its citizens from developing superpowers.

7) Zor-El

Kara’s father, Zor-El, was a scientist—much like Superman’s father—who found a way to save her when the city of Argo City was destroyed by radiation. He appears in flashbacks in the Supergirl movie, notably when he sends his teenage daughter away to protect her. In the comic books, Zor-El wasn’t introduced until after his wife, making his first appearance in Superman/Batman #9 in 2004. David Krumholtz (known for Serenity and The Deuce) portrays Zor-El in the movie. While he doesn’t have any superpowers, his scientific genius was key to saving Kara’s life.

6) Ruthye Marye Knoll

In the comic book Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a young girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll teams up with Supergirl to avenge her father’s death. The story is inspired by the classic film True Grit, with Supergirl taking on a role similar to John Wayne’s character, Rooster Cogburn. Though Ruthye starts out powerless, she’s as determined as her father, and with Supergirl’s help, she not only survives but becomes even stronger. Eve Ridley portrays Ruthye in the comic.

5) Krem of the Yellow Hills

Krem of the Yellow Hills is the primary villain in the Supergirl series. He first appeared in the comic book Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. Krem is a destructive and driven character, as shown in a recent trailer where he attacks Krypto with a poisoned dart. His strength comes not from his own abilities, but from the large army he commands, making him a formidable opponent. The comic book version of Krem also had powerful weapons, including a device that could send Supergirl to a planet with a red sun, effectively removing her from the battle. Matthias Schoenaerts, known for The Old Guard, plays Krem in Supergirl.

4) Krypto

Krypto is a remarkably powerful hero on Supergirl, and as seen in Superman, he has the potential to be an incredibly destructive force when aimed at the right targets. First appearing in Adventure Comics #210 in 1955 as Superboy’s pet, Krypto has been reimagined in the DC Universe as Supergirl’s dog. He was with her in Argo City and remains her steadfast companion – the one being with whom she truly feels a connection. Like Superman and Supergirl, Krypto possesses the same incredible powers, making him one of the world’s most powerful creatures. However, he also shares their vulnerabilities, and being a dog, lacks their patience and has a typical canine level of intelligence.

3) Lobo

Lobo considers himself the most powerful being in existence, and he’s proven to be a formidable opponent to even Superman in the comics. He’s willing to do anything to complete a job, typically capturing someone for a reward. Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Lobo in Supergirl feels like a particularly perfect role for him, even more so than his role as Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe. He’s incredibly powerful, nearly matching Supergirl’s strength. Lobo first appeared in Omega Men #3 back in 1983, and has a history of holding his own against powerful heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman.

2) Superman

Superman is often ranked as the most powerful character in DC Comics, and arguably in all of comics. David Corenswet reprises his role as Superman in Supergirl, but his appearance seems to be a brief cameo, simply a video call conversation. The first Superman movie clearly established him as Earth’s most powerful being, and he consistently demonstrates unparalleled power in the comics. Despite this, other characters are sometimes considered even more powerful overall.

1) Supergirl

While Superman and Supergirl are generally comparable in terms of strength and abilities, Supergirl often has the edge. Although Superman might be physically stronger, Supergirl’s upbringing gives her a different approach to heroism. Superman was raised with a strong moral compass emphasizing compassion and mercy, but Supergirl witnessed the destruction of her home world and doesn’t always believe in showing restraint. Because she’s not always willing to hold back, Supergirl can be considered the more powerful of the two, despite sharing the same powers as Superman.
