The Star Wars prequels had a big job: introducing a young Anakin Skywalker and showing how he eventually turned to the dark side. Attack of the Clones does a lot of this work, showing Anakin giving in to anger and killing Tusken Raiders – actions that go against the Jedi code. However, even with three films, Anakin’s transformation feels a bit too quick. To truly understand his fall, you need to watch The Clone Wars, the animated series that provides crucial context and fills in the missing pieces of the prequel story.
Over its seven seasons, The Clone Wars explored almost every significant location in the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on both the Republic’s army and its enemies. Despite its success, the show wasn’t able to complete every story it planned. Here’s a look at the nine unfinished storylines from The Clone Wars.
9) Crystal Crisis on Utapau

In Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the planet Utapau is where General Grievous hides out towards the end of the Clone Wars. Originally, The Clone Wars TV series almost included a storyline where Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi would travel to Utapau to look into a Jedi’s death, shortly after Ahsoka left the Jedi Order. Although Anakin is feeling depressed, he and Obi-Wan quickly uncover a new threat: Grievous is trying to obtain a large Kyber crystal to build a powerful weapon.
8) Son of Dathomir

The animated series The Clone Wars quickly establishes that Darth Maul survived, and he spends much of the show seeking revenge on Obi-Wan Kenobi. His actions draw the attention of Darth Sidious, leading to a confrontation between the two Sith Lords. While the series doesn’t show how Maul escaped Sidious, early plans involved a storyline where he would fight Count Dooku and General Grievous. Although that story was cut, Maul’s quest for revenge continued in the Star Wars: Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir comic book series.
7) Dark Disciple

Similar to Son of Dathomir, the Dark Disciple novel originated as a story idea for The Clone Wars animated series. After being dismissed by Count Dooku, Asajj Ventress is determined to get revenge on her former master. In her pursuit, she meets Quinlan Vos, a complex Jedi Knight. They develop a close relationship and work together to achieve their shared objective.
6) Bounty Hunter Arc

During The Clone Wars, Boba Fett is driven by a desire for revenge against the Jedi, who killed his father, Jango. Originally, there was a planned storyline where Boba would partner with the bounty hunter Cad Bane to build his reputation. This arc would have ended with Boba defeating and killing Bane in a fight. Interestingly, a similar outcome eventually happened years later when they met again in The Book of Boba Fett.
5) Return to Mon Cala

Political maneuvering is a major part of The Clone Wars, and Padmé Amidala spends a lot of time negotiating in the Senate. A storyline that was never finished showed Padmé traveling to Mon Cala to convince their leaders to oppose Chancellor Palpatine. As often happens in The Clone Wars, unexpected events put Padmé in serious danger.
4) Rex and R2-D2 Team-Up

One of the best things about The Clone Wars was seeing Anakin build relationships, and none were more crucial than his bond with Captain Rex, the commanding officer of the 501st Legion. I recently learned about a story they almost told – a really cool survival tale! Apparently, the plan was to have Rex and R2-D2 crash land on a moon of Ryloth. To make things even more interesting, they would have teamed up with a reprogrammed B2 battle droid to fight for their lives and try to get back to the Republic. It’s a shame it never made it to air, because it sounded like a fantastic adventure.
3) Yuuzhan Vong Attack

The Star Wars Legends stories feature many frightening creatures, like the Yuuzhan Vong – a species completely unaffected by the Force. Lucasfilm considered introducing them into the official canon through an abduction storyline in The Clone Wars. When someone is taken, the Republic rushes to investigate, but they quickly realize they know almost nothing about this new and mysterious enemy.
2) Yoda Visits Kashyyyk

In Revenge of the Sith, Yoda mentions his friendship with the Wookiees, but doesn’t share how that connection began. The backstory was originally planned to be explored in The Clone Wars. The show intended to send Yoda and the Bad Batch to Kashyyyk to help defend against an invasion by the Separatists and the Trandoshans – a species Chewbacca had previously angered during an earlier storyline.
1) Ahsoka’s Big Fight

The last season of The Clone Wars shows Ahsoka striking out on her own, leaving behind those who supported her. An uncompleted storyline would have brought her back for one last mission: investigating a Sith shrine hidden beneath the Jedi Temple. This would have led to a confrontation with Darth Sidious, before he became Emperor.
