It seemed like NFL coach Mike Vrabel was about to face serious consequences—he was spotted holding hands with married sports journalist Dianna Russini—but he quickly shifted the focus by challenging a call made during the game.

Photos published by Page Six on April 7th show he and a senior NFL reporter from The Athletic were at the same Sedona, Arizona hotel. However, they weren’t alone – they were with a larger group of people.

In a statement, Vrabel—who has been married to Jen Vrabel since 1999—called the photos a harmless interaction and dismissed any other interpretation as ridiculous. He stated he wouldn’t be commenting on the matter any further.

His friend, Russini, who has two children with her husband, Shake Shack executive Kevin Goldschmidt, offered to help.

She stated to TopMob News that the pictures didn’t accurately show the six people who were socializing earlier that day. She added that, like many NFL reporters, they often speak with sources in places other than stadiums or official events.

Who Is Mike Vrabel?

Mike Vrabel first gained prominence as a college football player at Ohio State University, where he was a two-time All-American and Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year in both 1995 and 1996. A local from Akron, Ohio, he was later inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame. Vrabel began his NFL career after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round in 1997, but he’s perhaps best known for his time with the New England Patriots.

He played for four seasons wearing black and yellow, but the majority of his career was with the Patriots. As an outside linebacker, his main job was to force fumbles, but he was also a surprising threat as a receiver, scoring 12 touchdowns with passes from quarterback Tom Brady.

After playing his final two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, the three-time Super Bowl winner retired in 2011 and immediately began a new career as a coach at his former college.

He didn’t become a head coach until 2018 with the Tennessee Titans, after spending almost seven years as an assistant with Ohio State and the Houston Texans.

When given the opportunity to coach his old team starting in January 2025, Vrabel quickly accepted. Although he had spoken with the New York Jets and Chicago Bears, he was particularly enthusiastic about the chance to be the play-caller for 23-year-old quarterback Drake Maye.

Thirteen months later, the two were huddling up at the 2026 Super Bowl. 

Who Is Dianna Russini?

Similar to Mike Vrabel, Jen Russini is a prominent figure in sports. She excelled in multiple high school sports at Northern Valley Regional in New Jersey, earning All-State honors in basketball, softball, soccer, and track. She continued her athletic career at George Mason University, where she played soccer for four years. However, she told USA Today High School Sports in 2017 that track and field was actually her strongest sport in high school.

After working as a reporter in Westchester, New York City, and Seattle, 43-year-old Russini joined NBC News as a sports anchor, with assignments in West Hartford, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C.

Starting in 2015, she began suiting up as a SportsCenter anchor.

When asked for her best advice to aspiring journalists, veteran reporter Madelyn Burke shared in a February interview with SportsCenter that persistence is key. She explained that her biggest breakthroughs always came when she pushed herself, even when it was uncomfortable, and refused to let obstacles stop her.

Russini explained that consistently taking initiative – like when she directly contacted NFL coach Bill Parcells – reinforced her confidence and inspired others, ultimately helping her achieve her goals. She believes that self-belief is key to success.

Diana Russini held a prominent position at The Athletic, a New York Times company, where she served as a senior NFL insider. NBC Sports reports she was among the site’s highest-paid writers. In addition to her writing, she co-hosts the Spotify podcast Scoop City: Inside the NFL alongside reporter James Palmer and former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel.

It wasn’t that ESPN didn’t want to keep me around,” Russini explained to NBC Sports about her move in 2023. “It was a tough choice for me and my family, but I felt I’d reached the limit of what I could achieve there.

But her team at The Athletic “just has an endless amount of roles and ideas for me.”

Who Are Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini Married to?

Before becoming a player for the Patriots, Mike Vrabel was a student at Ohio State where his future wife, Jen, first noticed him. She was on the volleyball team and saw him during a freshman orientation lecture. As she told The Tennessean in 2018, she thought he was funny and asked the professor for his number. They quickly fell in love and became a couple.

They got married in 1999, two years after he was drafted into the NBA and a year after she finished her dental hygiene training. They then had two sons, born in 2000 and 2001.

He explained at a 2018 press conference that he wasn’t present for the birth of his youngest child. His daughter arrived unexpectedly early while he was at football practice, and her mother had to be rushed to the hospital. He arrived four hours after she was born because of the practice and the emergency delivery in Ohio.

Now that their sons are pursuing their own sports – one as a coach at Boston College and the other playing baseball at Volunteer State and Tennessee Tech – the couple prioritizes weekly Friday date nights to stay connected and nurture their marriage.

Jenna Russini met her future husband, Shake Shack manager Goldschmidt, in 2015. They fell in love and had a small, private wedding ceremony on September 26, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

She celebrated her second wedding anniversary by sharing a heartfelt Instagram post about marrying Kev. She wrote that their Zoom wedding, surrounded by family and friends, was the best day of her life, and that she loves only him.

Plus a few extra teammates, with the arrivals of their sons in 2021 and 2022. 

Why Did Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini Come Under Fire?

Fans reacted strongly when photos surfaced of Vrabel and Russini relaxing at the adults-only Ambiente resort on March 28th. The pictures showed them sunbathing, hugging, and seemingly dancing. Both Vrabel and Russini said the photos didn’t tell the whole story, despite reports they also had breakfast, used the hot tub, and watched the sunset together from the roof.

According to Page Six, Vrabel visited Arizona briefly while Russini was there hiking with friends. He was in the area between scouting players at Arizona State University and attending an NFL committee meeting.

Russini and Vrabel have been friends since 2018, when Russini reported on the Titans for ESPN and Vrabel first became the team’s head coach.

This isn’t the first time reporter Russini has faced claims of wrongdoing. Back in 2015, while covering the Washington team, Jessica McCloughan publicly accused her of having a relationship with her husband, Scot McCloughan, who was the team’s general manager at the time.

After news broke that Kirk Cousins would be taking over as the team’s starting quarterback from Robert Griffin III, she allegedly tweeted – in a post that has since been deleted – that she believed the information was being leaked by her husband to his new mistress, Dianna.

I’ve been following this situation closely, and I think it’s important to address how quickly things can escalate. She realized her initial comment was way off base and immediately apologized, calling it ‘unfounded and inappropriate.’ It’s good she also made it clear she has a lot of respect for the reporter involved and for ESPN as a whole. Taking ownership and clarifying your stance is always the best approach when you misstep, and I think that’s what she did here.

The network publicly backed Russini, releasing a statement that Dianna is a talented reporter and doesn’t deserve the offensive comments she received. They expressed strong disapproval of the situation.

On April 7th, Dianna Russini’s employer also spoke out in her support. Steven Ginsberg, Executive Editor at The Athletic, released a statement to TopMob News saying the photos circulating were “misleading and lack essential context.” He clarified that the interactions shown were public and happened in front of witnesses, and reaffirmed their pride in having Russini as a leading NFL journalist on their team.
