All of Superman’s Sidekicks, Ranked

Superman, the last survivor of Krypton, isn’t a solitary hero. Throughout his history, he’s always fought alongside others, and over time, those allies have become a whole team of superpowered individuals – the Superman Family. As the hero who essentially created the modern idea of a superhero, it’s fitting that he would help other heroes develop their abilities. After all, Superman is the original superhero, so it’s natural he’d eventually mentor and work with several sidekicks and partners.

We’re going to rank every hero who’s been Superman’s sidekick, judging them on how well they fulfilled that role. Sometimes a character with more accomplishments will rank lower if their connection to Superman wasn’t as strong. While they all deserve recognition, we’ll be determining who was the very best. Let’s dive in and see how Superman’s sidekicks stack up!

10) Beppo the Super-Monkey

Beppo the Super-Monkey is widely considered Superman’s least useful sidekick. Like Krypto, Beppo was a Kryptonian animal who ended up on Earth by hiding on the ship that brought Superman. He consistently caused trouble for Clark Kent, often acting on impulse and mimicking others. This was particularly dangerous because Beppo possessed powers similar to Superman’s. At one point, Superboy abandoned Beppo on a distant planet, hoping he wouldn’t return, but Supergirl later brought him into the Legion of Super-Pets. Despite being somewhat amusing, Beppo remains Superman’s most easily forgotten pet, and for good reason.

9) Cir-El

As a lifelong Superman fan, I always found Cir-El fascinating. She was presented as Superman and Lois Lane’s daughter from a possible future, but it turned out she was just a regular girl whose genes had been altered to seem like their child. Still, she got to be Supergirl and fight alongside her dad, which was amazing – she was a hero inspired by the man she looked up to. I think she had limitless potential, being the first real attempt to give Superman a lasting child in the comics. Sadly, her time was cut short, and she kept switching into this other personality, Mia, who actively disliked Superman and everything he stood for. I really love the concept of Cir-El, but honestly, other characters just consistently offer a bit more to the story.

8) Chris Kent (Lor-Zod)

Lor-Zod, the son of General Zod, was born in the Phantom Zone and later came to Earth, where he was raised by Superman and Lois Lane as Chris Kent. For a short time, he fought crime alongside Superman as Superboy, but his unique biology caused him to age very quickly. He appeared to give his life to seal a gateway to the Phantom Zone, but eventually returned as Nightwing. Chris was the first biological child Superman and Lois tried to raise, and he positively influenced both of them. Unfortunately, their time together was brief, and we didn’t get to see much of Chris’s personality or how he interacted with others beyond a few sweet moments with Superman.

7) Superboy

It’s tough to rank Connor Kent (Superboy) low on a list of sidekicks, because he’s such a strong character. However, he never truly functioned as a traditional sidekick to Superman. From the beginning, Connor acted more like an independent hero, even while Superman was guiding him. He started as a rebellious teen who resisted authority, and eventually grew into a partner who worked with Superman, rather than simply following orders. While their early, forced sidekick dynamic lacked strong conflict, they always maintained a positive relationship. Superboy is a great character overall, but he didn’t bring much to the table as a sidekick, despite how much fans might have wanted that.

6) Boy Thunder

David Sikela was a boy who escaped the destruction of his home universe. His parents sent him to our world, where Superman took him in and raised him. This experience gave David superpowers, and he became Boy Thunder, fighting alongside Superman. David learned a lot from Superman, but also struggled with intense anger, creating friction in their relationship. He was often a great help, but sometimes a hindrance, and this unpredictability made their connection compelling. Superman cared for David deeply, like a son, but couldn’t always reach him. This inability to connect makes David similar to Superman’s previous protégé, Jason Todd, which adds a fascinating layer to their story.

5) Jimmy Olsen

Jimmy Olsen is a uniquely charming character, especially considering he usually doesn’t have any superpowers. He’s Superman’s best friend and has joined him on countless adventures, often finding himself in need of rescue. Even when Superman was operating secretly as Nightwing, Jimmy was right there as his partner, Flamebird. Throughout their many wild and humorous escapades, Jimmy consistently brings out a fun, playful side of Superman that no one else can. Their relationship is fantastic – sometimes they act like goofy brothers, and other times like a patient father looking after his mischievous son.

4) Krypto the Superdog

While Jimmy Olsen is a friend to Superman, Krypto the Superdog is his truest companion. Originally the El family’s dog from Krypton, he often arrived on Earth aboard a test rocket launched by Jor-El. Krypto is incredibly loyal and always willing to help, even if it means racing across the universe! He may not always understand what’s happening, but that doesn’t stop him from being a hero. Importantly, Krypto gives Superman a sense of normalcy. Caring for Krypto – though on a super scale – allows Superman to connect with everyday life and experience a bit of the ordinary.

3) The Super-Twins

Otho-Ra and Osul-Ra are twin brothers, descendants of Kryptonians, who grew up on the brutal planet Warworld under Mongul’s rule. After Superman freed Warworld, he took them in and raised them to be heroes, despite their difficult beginnings. The Super-Twins have become a great addition to Superman’s story, stepping in after Jon Kent grew older. They allow Superman to experience the joys of raising young children and fully express his paternal side. Both twins are enthusiastic learners, and Superman is happy to be their teacher. However, the biggest issue is that they rarely appear in stories. With more attention and development, they have the potential to become two of Superman’s most compelling characters.

2) Supergirl

Supergirl, also known as Kara Zor-El and Linda Danvers, was the first sidekick to Superman and a groundbreaking character. She provided him with a unique connection – someone who shared his Kryptonian background and understood his experiences. She quickly became a vital part of their adventures, proving to be just as important as Superman himself. Their dynamic is fantastic; Kara helps Clark embrace his Kryptonian roots while he shows her everything he loves about Earth. While I consider her an equal to Superman rather than a sidekick, her journey to becoming a crucial hero is truly impressive, and she deserves immense recognition.

1) Jon Kent

Jon Kent’s first appearance as Superboy signaled a fresh direction for Superman comics. For the first time, Superman’s role as a father felt permanent, and Jon proved to be a fantastic addition. His enthusiastic and optimistic nature complemented Superman’s personality beautifully. Jon showed immense potential as a hero, embodying the qualities that made his father great while also discovering his own identity. It was a joy to watch him develop, and even as he matured, he remained a compelling Superboy. The only disappointment was that his time as Superman’s sidekick was far too brief. Simply put, Jon Kent was the ideal partner for Superman.
