As a die-hard film enthusiast, let me tell you, there’s no denying that Wolverine stands out among the wildest mutants ever created. He’s a character who, due to his perilous lifestyle, can be as dangerous to know as he is intriguing. You see, Wolverine often pushes people away, fearful that the turmoil of his existence might cause hurt to those he cherishes. His life has molded him into a solitary figure, but like every loner, what Wolverine yearns for more than anything else is connection. This theme of reaching out has been a significant part of Wolverine’s journey throughout the years. Yet, when it comes to women, Wolverine has never faced much of a challenge. He may not fit traditional ideals of attractiveness, but that hasn’t deterred him from cultivating numerous romantic relationships over time.
Having romantic feelings for Wolverine isn’t always beneficial, as it often leads to tragic outcomes for the women involved. In fact, a significant number of his love interests have met untimely ends. Throughout his life, Wolverine has been associated with various types of women (many of whom share some common traits), demonstrating his versatility in relationships. While he might resemble a himbo similar to Daredevil, Wolverine has had profound relationships over the years. Here, we will focus on his most significant love interests, each playing crucial roles in his life and journey. For this list, we’ll exclude love interests from alternate universes, as they are less explored.
Being in a relationship with Wolverine can be dangerous because many of his past partners have died. Despite this, he has had meaningful relationships with different types of women throughout his life. This list highlights the most important ones, all of whom significantly impacted his life. We won’t include love interests from alternate realities, as they are not fully developed characters in the storyline.
8) (Tie) Rose and Itsu

In the narrative of Wolverine’s history, both Rose and Itsu play significant roles yet are often considered among his least compelling romantic interests due to their underdeveloped characters. Rose, initially hired by the Howlett family to care for young James, developed into his first crush. However, they never became a couple; Rose eventually ended up with someone named Smitty and met her unfortunate end in a fight between James and his half-brother Dog Logan. Itsu, Wolverine’s Japanese wife from the ’40s, is the mother of Akihiro. Unfortunately, she was taken by the Winter Soldier. Despite their importance, neither character is particularly captivating, with Rose often falling into cliches and Itsu having few speaking appearances in the comic panels. Essentially, while serving as archetypes in Wolverine’s life, Itsu and Rose lack depth as characters.
7) Mystique

As a die-hard X-Men fan, I can’t help but reminisce about the intricate relationship between Mystique and Wolverine – a rollercoaster of love and hate that unfolded in the early 20th century. Initially, they were more like a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde, bound by mutual goals and shared interests. However, their bond turned volatile as they transitioned from lovers to adversaries, with moments of animosity intertwined with occasional reconciliations.
Though their romantic connection didn’t last long, it played a significant role in the formative years of Jason Aaron’s Wolverine series during the late ’00s and early ’10s. However, as Marvel reintroduced Destiny and shifted Mystique’s sexual orientation towards lesbianism in more recent times (a shift from her original bi-sexuality), their romantic past has taken a backseat, which is why it finds itself lower on the list of notable X-Men relationships.
6) Jean Grey

Jean Grey frequently features as one of Wolverine’s most significant and widely recognized romantic interests throughout their long history together. Often, Wolverine’s feelings for Jean have gone unrequited since the moment they first met due to a striking resemblance between her and Rose. Over time, this initial infatuation transformed into deep-seated affection.
Contrary to some fan theories suggesting that Jean never reciprocated Wolverine’s love, she does indeed harbor feelings for him that go beyond friendship. Despite their shared romantic moments, their relationship has been marked by a mutual understanding that it would not be feasible for them to be together, as seen in various alternate realities where it tends to fail.
In the Krakoa Era, hints emerged suggesting that Jean, Cyclops, and Wolverine might have formed a romantic triad – though these were largely implied rather than explicitly stated. During this period, there was a noticeable connection between Jean and Wolverine.
Jean Grey is known for her complex character traits, and her relationship with Wolverine reflects this complexity as much as any other aspect of her personality.
5) Yukio

In simpler terms, Yukio is commonly perceived as a love interest for Storm, but she had a brief romantic involvement with Wolverine in the comic series “Wolverine” (Vol. 1) issues 1-4. After Shingen Yashida attempted to kill him, Yukio rescued and trained Wolverine, helping him control the human side more than his animalistic nature. Over time, their romantic relationship waned, but they occasionally reconnected. Yukio is the person Wolverine entrusted with his foster daughter Amiko, demonstrating a bond based on mutual trust. Yukio met Wolverine during a chaotic period in his life, but she believed he would never harm her, which reinforced their relationship. Wolverine trusts Yukio implicitly, knowing that despite being labeled as a wild ninja, she is someone he can rely on unconditionally.
4) Storm

As a film enthusiast who adores the X-Men universe, I’ve always held Storm in high regard among the Omega-class mutants. She joined forces with Wolverine back in the day, and our bond deepened over time to feel more like family than just teammates, underpinned by a strong platonic love. However, after the Schism and following Avengers Vs. X-Men, Storm shifted allegiances from Cyclops to Wolverine, leading us into a romantic entanglement that was met with mixed reactions due to our longstanding friendship. Yet, upon reflection, this relationship appears more plausible than it initially seemed, especially when compared to Storm’s relationship with Black Panther.
Over the years, we stood side by side, saving each other countless times, forging a connection that Wolverine didn’t share with many others. His relationships with other X-Women were often characterized as mentor and student, while his connection with Jean was more about a man loving an ideal. But with Storm, it was always a relationship between equals.
There are hints that this relationship may be revisited in the future, which, to be honest, leaves me quite intrigued.
3) Silver Fox

Prepare yourself, as the character known as Silver Fox can get rather intricate. She made her debut in one of the most renowned Wolverine stories, specifically in Wolverine (Vol. 2) #10. Originally a member of the Blackfoot tribe, she developed feelings for Wolverine after he was adopted by the tribe during the late 19th century. They shared a life together in a tranquil part of Canadian wilderness, constructing a cabin. On Wolverine’s birthday, Sabretooth intruded upon their sanctuary and tragically killed Silver Fox (there is also an insinuation of sexual assault). This event ignited the first confrontation between Wolverine and Sabretooth, and it significantly shaped their animosity.
However, Silver Fox resurfaced in Wolverine (Vol. 2) #50 during a period when Wolverine was investigating the secrets of Weapon X following the conclusion of the famous “Weapon X” storyline. Deceived by manipulation from Weapon X survivors, Wolverine believed his memories of Silver Fox to be fabricated and that the woman portraying Silver Fox was the genuine article. They eventually came to blows, and she was fatally wounded by Aldo Ferro. After regaining his authentic memories in House of M, Wolverine discovered that his recollections of Silver Fox were indeed accurate, and the subsequent woman was possibly a clone or imposter.
2) Melita Garner

In less formal language,
When people talk about Wolverine’s top loves, they often overlook Melita Garner, but she deserves more attention. She was a journalist in San Francisco who got involved with Wolverine after he rescued her from some goons. Intrigued by him, she wrote about him and ended up caught in his fight against The Facility and its corporate sponsors. They started dating, and Melita often acted as his “right-hand woman,” helping him make decisions and plan his next moves.
During a time when Wolverine was possessed by a demon due to the Red Right Hand, she was instrumental in getting the X-Men involved and even enlisted Mystique’s help to cast out the demon within him. After the X-Men split following Schism, Melita found work at The Daily Bugle and they continued their relationship. Eventually, they broke up before he got together with Storm. Following Wolverine’s death, she wrote a book about his life.
Melita was usually portrayed as a “fridged” love interest, but she managed to survive all the hardships and is still around today. Her relationship with Wolverine was strong, and it’s somewhat disappointing that they eventually parted ways.
1) Mariko Yashida

In essence, Mariko Yashida, a crime lord’s daughter with ties to X-Men members like Sunfire and Silver Samurai, developed feelings for Wolverine after initial apprehension. Their relationship displayed a softer side of Wolverine, but was tragically interrupted when Mastermind manipulated her mind, leading to their separation. Filled with shame, Mariko distanced herself from Wolverine until she felt worthy of him again, and in the process, started disconnecting from her Yakuza roots. During this period, she sought help from Wolverine as she confronted Matsu’o Tsurayaba and the Hand, only to be fatally poisoned by Matsu’o. In retaliation, Wolverine swore revenge against Matsu’o. Later, Mariko was brought back to life as the Scarlet Samurai and clashed with Old Man Logan before reaching peace with him. Although Wolverine has been resurrected, they’ve only reconnected off-panel once since then. Mariko remains a significant love interest for Wolverine, and it appears that her return to his storyline may be imminent based on recent plot developments.
