All the dragons in House of the Dragon – full guide

As a seasoned dragon rider of House Targaryen, I have been fortunate to forge bonds with some of the most fearsome and magnificent beasts that ever graced this earth. I have felt their fiery breath upon my skin, heard their roars echo through the heavens, and seen their wings cast shadows over entire cities.

☢️ Caution: This content includes plot points from the book “Fire & Blood” and the seventh episode of season 2 from “House of the Dragon.”

Approaching the blazing end of House of the Dragon’s second season, we’re encountering additional dragon riders amidst the ongoing Dance of Dragons.

In the seventh episode of Season 2, Hugh Hammer (Kieran Bew) and Ulf White (Tom Bennett), two individuals with dragonlineage, successfully claimed their dragons following a summons from Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), who sought out potential Targaryen offspring, or “dragonseeds.”

1. Approaching the unavoidable fierce confrontation between the Green and Black factions – with the season 2 finale fast approaching – allow us to provide you with a comprehensive overview of the dragons in House of the Dragon.

  • Syrax (Rhaenyra Targaryen’s dragon)
  • Caraxes (Daemon Targaryen’s dragon)

  • Seasmoke (Addam of Hull’s dragon and formerly ridden by Laenor Targaryen)

The following dragons are deceased in House of the Dragon season 2:

  • Arrax (Lucerys Velaryon’s dragon)
  • Balerion (Aegon the Conqueror’s dragon who was then ridden by Prince Viserys before he became King)
  • Meleys (Rhaenys Targaryen’s dragon)

Vhagar

Owner: Aemond Targaryen

Status: Alive

As a movie buff, I’m thrilled to share that Vhagar, far from being a mere memory, is very much alive and thriving as we dive into season 2. She stands out as the largest dragon among them all. When it comes to the upcoming war, fearsome warrior Aemond will rely heavily on Vhagar’s immense power and ferocity.

1. Vhagar, initially mounted by Visenya Targaryen, later belonged to Baelon, Laena Targaryen, and eventually Aemond. Although a comprehensive description of her didn’t survive, George RR Martin clarified to an artist intending to portray her that she was bronze with greenish-blue accents, sporting vibrant green eyes. She would ultimately become the largest dragon in Westeros.

Vermithor

Owner: Hugh Hammer

Status: Alive

As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I’d rephrase that as follows: In the epic series Dance of the Dragons, an elder dragon named Vermithor takes center stage. During season 2, episode 7, Hugh Hammer seized this magnificent beast, in response to Rhaenyra’s plea for dragoneeds or Targaryen bastards. Amidst the gruesome spectacle of his rivals perishing in fiery demise, Hugh managed to secure Vermithor, a dragon renowned as the largest on earth after Vhagar.

Arrax

Owner: Lucerys Targaryen

Status: Dead

At the finale of episode 10 in Westeros, Arrax participated in the first significant dragon battle that had lasted for years. He engaged in a fierce confrontation with Vhagar and Aemond, unfortunately resulting in both Arrax and his rider, Lucerys, meeting their demise. This pivotal event will serve as the spark for an impending civil war.

Vermax

Owner: Jacaerys Verlaryon

Status: Alive

Although Vermax has made only a brief appearance in season 1, specifically in episode 6 where Jace attempts to teach him how to breathe fire at will, he later becomes an essential figure in the Dance of the Dragons. In episode 10, Vermax and his rider travel to Winterfell and the Eyrie to secure backing for his mother.

Syrax

Owner: Rhaenyra Targaryen

Status: Alive

1. Syrax belongs exclusively to Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (portrayed by Emma D’Arcy). She is described as having a yellowish color, though not as large as some of the other dragons you’ll encounter in the series. At just seven years old, Rhaenyra first mounts her trusty companion, Syrax.

Meleys

Owner: Princess Rhaenys

Status: Dead

In House of the Dragon’s second season, episode 4, Meleys and Rhaenys engaged in a fierce battle. However, they met their tragic end, succumbing to the actions of Aemond Targaryen and his dragon, Vhagar.

Dreamfyre

Owner: Helena Targaryen

Status: Presumed alive

Blue and silver Dreamfyre is a thing of beauty and is treasured by Helaena Targaryen.

Caraxes

Owner: Daemon Targaryen

Status: Alive

By the time we encounter Caraxes in House of the Dragon, the dragon has already had two previous masters: Prince Aemon Targaryen, who was next in line to King Jaehaerys Targaryen, and Prince Daemon Targaryen, portrayed by Matt Smith. The dragon is chiefly red in coloration, earning it the moniker ‘Blood Wyrm’.

Balerion

Owner: Viserys Targaryen

Status: Dead

1. Balerion, a dragon belonging to House Targaryen, has been successively owned by various family members over time. This list includes Aegon I Targaryen, Maegor I Targaryen, Aerea Targaryen, and in the series “House of the Dragon,” he is under the possession of Viserys I Targaryen (portrayed by Paddy Considine). In the books, Balerion is described as having black scales and wings, with flames that are black but tinged with red.

1. In legend, a colossal dragon named Balerion possessed the ability to liquefy metals and rocks. His wingspan was so expansive that it cast gigantic shadows over settlements as he soared through the skies. As told in tales, Balerion played a crucial role in helping Aegon forge the Iron Throne, which the upcoming owner is expected to occupy.

In House of the Dragon, Balerion is already deceased when we encounter him, and his skull is kept as a memorial.

Seasmoke

Owner: Addam of Hull

Status: Alive

Seasmoke, a dragon with a pale and gray hue, stands out among other dragons in House of the Dragon. Originally belonging to Laenor Velaryon, he is now under the possession of Addam of Hull, an illegitimate son of Corlys Velaryon (portrayed by Steve Toussaint). In episode 7 of season 2, Rhaneyra confronted Addam who vowed his loyalty to her.

Silverwing

Owner: Ulf the White

Status: Alive

It’s not surprising that Silverwing has a silvery hue and is known for its calm demeanor. This dragon shares a strong bond with Vermithor. In the novels, Silverwing loses her rider after Queen Alysanne’s demise. However, during the Dance of Dragons, she forms a connection with a new rider named Ulf the White, as depicted in season 2 episode 7.

Moondancer

Owner: Baela Targaryen

Status: Alive

1. Moondancer, a lithe, pastel-green dragon, is quite agile despite being relatively small in size. At only the dimension of a warhorse, Baela first mounted her when she was fourteen years old.

Sheepstealer

Owner: Rhaena Targaryen/Nettles

Status: Alive

The book describes a wild dragon called Sheepstealer who was claimed by Nettles. However, it appears her narrative shares similarities with that of Rhaena Targaryen.)

Sunfyre

Owner: King Aegon Targaryen

Status: Alive

King Aegon Targaryen mounts Sunfyre, a powerful dragon adorned with radiant golden scales. In the impending “Dance of Dragons,” Sunfyre’s role will be pivotal due to its formidable combat abilities.

Tyraxes

Owner: Prince Joffrey Velaryon

Status: Alive

Tyraxes is a relatively small dragon who was bonded with Prince Joffrey Velaryon from birth.
