As a movie fan, I’ve definitely seen this happen before – a forgotten film suddenly gets a second life. Sometimes it becomes a beloved cult classic, or it just explodes online as a meme – remember Jeremiah Johnson? But honestly, I never would have predicted this for a 2007 thriller that was absolutely panned by critics. I mean, it only has an 8% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and yet, somehow, it’s currently the 8th most-watched movie on FlixPatrol! It’s wild to see a movie everyone dismissed doing so well.
The movie Premonition, with Sandra Bullock and Julian McMahon, isn’t considered a particularly good film. It borrows ideas from movies like The Sixth Sense and Groundhog Day, with a touch of Memento, to tell the story of Linda (Bullock) who starts experiencing events surrounding her husband Jim’s (McMahon) death in a jumbled order. Knowing what’s going to happen, she tries to prevent his death and uncovers secrets about his life. Film critic Tim Bragen perfectly described the film’s biggest flaw: it lacks any real purpose or meaning, even beyond simply being a poorly made movie.
So, How Has Premonition Made It Onto A Top 10 List?
It’s hard to say what to make of this film – opinions are overwhelmingly negative. One viewer described it as a thriller that unfortunately becomes problematic and leaves the female lead unsupported. Another critic noted it had the potential to be exciting, but was let down by a weak central relationship and poorly executed flashbacks.
Despite its flaws, Premonition has clearly attracted a dedicated following, with fans eager to defend it. One viewer explained, “It makes you think – it’s not a typical, polished, and predictable movie, but it is unsettling and intentionally confusing. Sandra Bullock is great in it. Everything feels flipped – like up is down and left is right. Honestly, the ending isn’t what you expect, but I actually found that refreshing because it’s nice when you can’t predict what’s going to happen.”
Okay, so Premonition had a really interesting premise, and honestly, it could have been a truly great thriller. It’s packed with twists you don’t see coming! But, and this is a big ‘but’, I didn’t feel like the movie ever quite lived up to its potential. It felt a little lost as it went along, which was a shame because the initial idea was so strong.
