Almost 40 Years On, A Gangster Movie Masterpiece Is a Streaming Hit After Releasing Free

Brian De Palma is known for successfully working in many different genres, consistently leaving a distinctive style on everything he does. He’s made notable films in horror – like Sisters and Obsession – musicals with Phantom of the Paradise, and even a memorable adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie. He’s also a master of Hitchcock-style thrillers, demonstrated in films like Dressed to Kill, Body Double, and particularly Blow Out. Beyond these, he’s directed a powerful war film (Casualties of War), launched the Mission: Impossible franchise, and created a beloved cult classic, Snake Eyes, starring Nicolas Cage. However, his biggest impact may be in the gangster film genre.

While Wise Guys didn’t quite hit the mark, Carlito’s Way and Scarface, both featuring Al Pacino, are considered classics of the gangster film genre. Though Tony Montana’s story in Scarface is iconic, Brian De Palma’s strongest gangster film is actually The Untouchables, which is now available to watch for free on Tubi with just a few ads.

What Makes The Untouchables One of De Palma’s Greatest Films & How Is It Doing on Tubi?

While The Untouchables doesn’t stick closely to the actual events of Eliot Ness’s fight against Al Capone, it’s a very enjoyable movie. Kevin Costner perfectly portrays Ness as an ordinary hero, and Andy Garcia shines as the driven George Stone, while Charles Martin Smith is excellent as the quiet but courageous Oscar Wallace. However, the standout performance comes from Sean Connery as the experienced Jimmy Malone – a role that earned him his only Academy Award (he had previously been nominated as a producer for The Longest Day twenty-five years earlier).

Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables is a technically brilliant film. David Mamet wrote one of his strongest screenplays, Ennio Morricone composed an unforgettable score, and the set design perfectly recreates the 1930s. De Palma’s direction is precise and compelling. The film also features thrilling action, including a memorable chase across rooftops with Ness pursuing Frank Nitti, and the iconic slow-motion scene at Union Station involving a baby carriage.

Currently, only one movie on Tubi is more popular than The Untouchables: A Mother’s Confession, which is an original film made for the platform. After that, the top ten includes the comedy The Heat, serious crime dramas like Four Brothers and Triple Nine, John Woo’s war movie Windtalkers, the classic Grease, the surprisingly popular Gods of Egypt, the original Road House, and the holiday favorite Jingle All the Way.

Enjoying The Untouchables and want more crime movies? Check out King of New York, Hoodlum, The Iceman, and Donnie Brasco, all available to stream on Tubi. You’ll also find Brian De Palma’s Carlito’s Way there.
