What Makes The Untouchables One of De Palma’s Greatest Films & How Is It Doing on Tubi?

While The Untouchables doesn’t stick closely to the actual events of Eliot Ness’s fight against Al Capone, it’s a very enjoyable movie. Kevin Costner perfectly portrays Ness as an ordinary hero, and Andy Garcia shines as the driven George Stone, while Charles Martin Smith is excellent as the quiet but courageous Oscar Wallace. However, the standout performance comes from Sean Connery as the experienced Jimmy Malone – a role that earned him his only Academy Award (he had previously been nominated as a producer for The Longest Day twenty-five years earlier).

Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables is a technically brilliant film. David Mamet wrote one of his strongest screenplays, Ennio Morricone composed an unforgettable score, and the set design perfectly recreates the 1930s. De Palma’s direction is precise and compelling. The film also features thrilling action, including a memorable chase across rooftops with Ness pursuing Frank Nitti, and the iconic slow-motion scene at Union Station involving a baby carriage.
