It’s a bit different this year – there’s no new Star Wars movie in theaters for the holidays. But as a huge fan, I know I’ll still find ways to celebrate! I’m already planning a movie marathon during winter break, and I’m hoping Santa brings some new Star Wars goodies. There are also tons of books to dive into. And it’s awesome that Lucasfilm is getting into the holiday spirit too, with a special retelling of a classic Star Wars moment that’s starting a brand new series!
Lucasfilm recently shared a fun video on the Star Wars Kids YouTube channel called “The Gingerbread Death Star Crumbles.” It’s a playful take on the famous Death Star attack from the original Star Wars: A New Hope, but with a sweet twist – all the spaceships and characters are made of gingerbread! The video is the first in a new series called “Star Wars Minis” created by employees at Industrial Light & Magic as a tribute to their love of Star Wars.
The official Star Wars website announced that more Star Wars Minis animated shorts are planned for release in 2026. A sneak peek showed some upcoming episodes, including one with Din Djarin and Grogu characters made from yarn. You can watch “The Gingerbread Death Star Crumbles” below!
Star Wars Minis Is a Creative Way to Get Kids Interested in the Franchise
Lucasfilm is making it clear that Star Wars Minis are designed for young fans by releasing these shorts on the Star Wars Kids YouTube channel. While they’re different from watching the full movies and shows on Disney+, these short, animated recreations of classic moments are a fun way to introduce children to the world of Star Wars. The bright and colorful animation style is sure to grab kids’ attention and spark their imaginations. It’s a great project from ILM, and fans can look forward to more of these shorts in the future.
The Minis videos not only offer a fun introduction to Star Wars for kids, but also allow the talented artists at ILM to explore their own hobbies and creativity. For example, Landis Fields, inspired by his enjoyment of baking competition shows, created the charming “Gingerbread Death Star” short, successfully capturing the excitement of the classic Star Wars battle. If other Minis shorts were made with this same spirit, each one should showcase the personality and passions of the ILM visual effects artists behind them.
Lucasfilm is making a smart move by doing this now. With a new Star Wars film, The Mandalorian & Grogu, coming to theaters next year – the first in seven years – Lucasfilm is aiming to capture the attention of fans of all ages, much like they did a decade ago with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. These new animated shorts could get younger viewers excited about Star Wars and encourage them to watch the existing movies and shows before the new film comes out. And just as seeing Star Wars inspired the creators at ILM today, this animation could inspire a new generation to create their own projects.
It’s unusual to see Darth Vader and the Millennium Falcon made into gingerbread for a short film, but this project really shows how creative the artists at ILM are and how much of an impact Star Wars has had on the world of entertainment. Few franchises could pull this off, but Star Wars is definitely one of them. While this isn’t necessarily aimed at longtime fans, they might still enjoy seeing familiar scenes reimagined in a completely new and fun way.
