Reintroducing Rob McElhenney.
The actor known for his roles in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Welcome to Wrexham” has officially adopted the new moniker “Rob Mac.” He legally filed this change in Los Angeles, confirming the news to Variety on June 27. (The name change was initially reported by TMZ.)
Back in May, Mac openly shared his intention to shorten his nickname in an interview with Variety, expressing that it often leads to confusion. “Given that our company (More Better Industries) and our narrative are broadening into various global regions and languages where my name is especially difficult to pronounce, I will simply be known as Rob Mac,” he stated.
At that point, he mentioned, “Folks often refer to me as ‘Rob Mac’ or simply ‘Mac,’ inspired by the television series. It certainly simplifies matters.
His longtime spouse, Kaitlin Olson, who is his partner for 17 years and together they have sons Axel Lee (age 14) and Leo Grey (age 13), was yet to fully adapt to the idea of changing their last name, as she shared with Variety in an interview, “The children aren’t pleased about this change, as they are connected to that surname. And I, legally, am too!
As a diehard fan, I can’t help but notice an intriguing trend in the latest press releases from FX. Both my beloved “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and the captivating “Wrexham” series have been subtly introducing Rob McElhenney as simply “Rob Mac.” It’s a small change, but it feels like a significant nod to his iconic status, doesn’t it?
For quite some time, Mac’s name has been the subject of jokes, particularly with his friend and Wrexham AFC co-owner, Ryan Reynolds, putting out a music video in 2023 on his birthday that jokingly mocked Mac’s pronunciation.
Even though Macklemore garners praise and fame, there’s one thing many people don’t know: how to pronounce his name,” Reynolds, 48, crooned about his fans. (In other words, he sang, just say, “Mack-leh-moree.”)
In an interview with Variety, Mac explained that he chose not to change his original name because of his pride in its ancestry. He had initially resisted the suggestion when everyone was encouraging him to adopt a stage name instead.
Eventually, it became clear to Mac that having a stage name might have benefited him significantly earlier in his career. Interestingly, even his own siblings express envy over the name change.
Rob shared, “My brother mentioned he was seriously thinking about contesting elections in Culver City, under the name ‘Pat Mac.’ He further stated that his sister Katie, known for her work on shows like ‘Always Sunny’ and ‘Mythic Quest,’ often gets called ‘Katie Mac’ by everyone worldwide.
It was discovered, upon conducting my family history research and receiving the results, that my surname has been altered numerous times. As recent as the ’60s, there emerged a branch of the McElhenneys who decided to change our name. Therefore, it wasn’t until 1965 that people started being very particular about it. He shared this information with Variety.
Currently, Rob’s expertise in business matters is gaining more recognition compared to his screen performances. Lately, he’s been expanding his influence with More Better Industries by investing globally, notably in soccer teams based in Colombia and Mexico, as well as shares in clothing, technology, and beverage companies.
