So, I just heard some pretty shocking news – Amazon is shutting down one of their biggest games early next year! It’s kinda crazy because Amazon’s been trying to get more into gaming for the last ten years. They haven’t released a ton of games, but when they do, they’ve actually had some big hits, especially on PC. But now, even though this game was pretty successful, they’re just pulling the plug and taking it off the store with no warning. It’s a bummer for those of us who enjoyed it.
This week, Amazon announced it’s shutting down New World, the online game released in 2021. While New World initially sold millions of copies and was a big success for Amazon, its popularity declined over time. Even a relaunch in 2024 with the new title New World: Aeternum couldn’t revive player numbers. With the game continuing to lose momentum, Amazon has decided to discontinue it completely.
Amazon has announced that the game New World will officially shut down on January 31, 2027. After that date, the game will no longer be playable because the servers will be taken offline. Currently, New World is no longer available for purchase.
The team behind New World: Aeternum shared that it’s been a joy working on the game and growing the experience with players. They’re excited to spend one more year with the community and give this adventure a proper farewell, thanking everyone for being a part of the world they’ve created.
Although Amazon is ending support for New World, they aren’t leaving the video game industry. The next couple of years look promising, with plans to release Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst. Legacy of Atlantis is a remake of the first Tomb Raider game and is scheduled for release this year. Catalyst will be the newest main game in the Tomb Raider series. Amazon is also working on other games that haven’t been announced yet.
