Amazon’s ‘God of War’ Series Adds Ryan Hurst as Kratos

The upcoming God of War television series has cast an actor with previous ties to the franchise as Kratos. The show, based on the popular PlayStation video game series, will be produced jointly by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Frederick E.O. Toye, an Emmy-winning director known for shows like Shōgun, Fallout, and The Boys, will direct the first two episodes. Ronald D. Moore, the creative force behind Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, will oversee the series as showrunner, executive producer, and writer.

Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios have announced that Ryan Hurst will play Kratos in the upcoming God of War series. Hurst is known for his roles as Opie in Sons of Anarchy and Beta in The Walking Dead, and has also appeared in films like Saving Private Ryan and Remember the Titans. He’s set to be in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey as well. Interestingly, Hurst has previous ties to the God of War universe, having voiced Thor in God of War: Ragnarök (2022). Previously, Terrence C. Carson and, since 2018, Christopher Judge have voiced the character of Kratos.

The new series, God of War, centers on Kratos and his son Atreus as they travel to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. During their journey, Kratos attempts to guide Atreus in becoming a worthy god, while Atreus tries to help his father connect with his humanity. The show is based on the critically acclaimed 2018 God of War game, which successfully rebooted the franchise that began in 2005. Here’s a description of Kratos’ character:

Kratos, the central figure of the God of War series, was born a Spartan warrior and became a god. He led armies for Sparta until he made a deal with the god Ares, trading his soul for victory in battle. Over the course of ten popular games, Kratos defeated countless enemies – humans, monsters, and even gods – becoming a well-known figure in popular culture for his strength, silence, and heartbreaking history. The new God of War live-action series will continue his story, focusing on the events of the most recent games, and explore a new side of Kratos: his relationship with his ten-year-old son, Atreus. This father-son bond has become a key part of the God of War story and will be central to the new show.

Originally intended as a movie, God of War is now being developed as a TV series by PlayStation Studios. After creative differences with Amazon’s Prime Video led to the departure of initial showrunners Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby (The Expanse), and Rafe Judkins (Wheel of Time), Ronald D. Moore joined the project in October 2024. While casting is happening now, a start date for filming hasn’t been announced. Prime Video has already committed to two seasons of the series.
