Sydney Sweeney is gaining increasing recognition, and with several promising films on the horizon, it’s no surprise that her smaller drama, *Americana*, is getting a lot of attention as it becomes available to stream after a brief theatrical release. The film focuses on a group of characters whose stories become connected through a mysterious item – a ‘ghost shirt,’ traditionally considered sacred by Native Americans and believed to offer protection. The film’s premise subtly mirrors a recent scandal involving politicians who profited from supplying masks during the pandemic, suggesting a similar pattern of opportunism.
The film is divided into five parts and features a colorful cast of characters. These include a man who frequently proposes marriage (Paul Walter Hauser), a shy waitress hoping to become a country singer (Sydney Sweeney), and a young boy who believes he’s the reincarnation of Sitting Bull (Gavin Maddox Bergman). The group is rounded out by a collection of dishonest individuals, creating a chaotic atmosphere reminiscent of a talk show green room. The story centers around a valuable ghost shirt owned by the self-absorbed businessman Duvall (Toby Huss). Antiques dealer Roy Lee Dean (Simon Rex) hires some criminals to steal it, which quickly leads to violence and hints at the film’s ultimate outcome. Others are also interested in the ghost shirt, including Mandy (Halsey, styled after Joan Jett) and the waitress, both of whom see it as a way to improve their lives.
Tony Tost’s film clearly draws inspiration from Quentin Tarantino and the Coen brothers, using techniques like chapter titles and a non-linear storyline. It features a diverse cast and isn’t afraid of graphic violence. The actors fully commit to their roles, and Halsey, in particular, delivers a standout performance, potentially surpassing Lady Gaga as an actress – this film is one of several good ones she’s been in.
Americana starts as a unique and interesting crime show, but it later shifts away from its originality and becomes a very violent action thriller.
