Director James Cameron, known for films like Titanic and Avatar, has given an update on his planned war movie based on the books Ghosts of Hiroshima and The Last Train From Hiroshima. While he purchased the rights to combine these stories into one film last year, it sounds like the project is on hold. Cameron is currently focusing on other commitments, including continuing work on the Avatar franchise with the still-developing Avatar 4.

I was listening to James Cameron on Matthew Belloni’s podcast, The Town, and it was fascinating! He really dove into what’s happening in Hollywood right now, especially all the big battles going on at Warner Bros. He also shared some thoughts on AI, which is something I’m always curious about from a filmmaker’s perspective. Of course, we talked about Avatar: Fire and Ash, and he made it clear that its performance will be a big test to see if he can keep building out that Avatar world the way he envisions. When asked about other projects he’s working on, he mentioned the Hiroshima film is further off than anyone’s expecting – a bit disappointing to hear, but understandable given the scope of his work.

I’m currently juggling ten different projects. That film idea got some attention when my friend announced their book, and we were trying to boost its sales. I still plan to make the film eventually, but I haven’t started writing the script, there are no firm plans for it at the moment, and I haven’t secured a distributor. Right now, it’s more of an idea than an actual project.

Even though he’s consistently achieved success, Cameron recently admitted the future of the Avatar series isn’t guaranteed. These films are incredibly ambitious and costly to produce, and while he has plans for several sequels, continued strong box office numbers are essential. The pressure is definitely on, and the upcoming movie will likely determine whether he remains a major force in Hollywood filmmaking.
