Amphibia Creator Announces Show’s Spiritual Successor, Creates New Studio

After Sony Animation canceled an animated film project by Matt Braly and Rebecca Sugar, the creator of Amphibia shared a statement about the situation. Fortunately, Braly isn’t stopping there – he’s already working on a new animated project. Though different from the frog-filled, supernatural world of Amphibia, he’s hinted at a thrilling new adventure, and is partnering with a new studio to bring it to life. Despite the setback with Sony, Matt Braly remains dedicated to creating animation.

I was really disappointed to hear that my animated movie fell through, but I’m SO excited to finally share what I’ve been working on next! It’s called Clara & The Below, and it’s going to be a totally different vibe – think gothic horror! We’re taking the classic Nutcracker story and giving it a seriously creepy twist. And even bigger news – I’m starting my own animation studio, Fantasy Project! Seeing Dana Terrace launch her own thing with Knights of Guinevere was super inspiring, and I’m ready to dive into creating my own original animated world. Check out a first look at the series below – I can’t wait for you all to see it!

I was really moved by all the supportive messages I got yesterday. They’ve given me a lot of motivation as I start working on a major new project: the first episode of an animated gothic horror take on the Nutcracker, called “Clara and the Below.”

Clara & The Below is Coming

To bring this new animated world to life, Braly has launched a Kickstarter campaign to maintain the project’s independence. You can find the campaign by clicking here. Along with the new website, Matt announced, “This project will be entirely funded by fans through crowdfunding. Follow our pre-launch page here for updates leading up to our March 13th launch.” Given Braly’s experience on shows like Amphibia, Gravity Falls, The Mitchells Vs. The Machines, and Steven Universe, Clara & The Below is definitely an animated project worth watching.

Last year at San Diego Comic-Con, creator Matt Braly hinted that Amphibia might return in 2025, but not as a traditional TV show. He suggested revisiting the characters and world in a surprising new format. Currently, any potential return is uncertain, especially with Braly now focused on a different project. Despite this, Amphibia has left a lasting impact on animation, and its dedicated fans continue to discuss and appreciate the series.
