Nick Antosca has confirmed just how terrifying Amy Adams’ crime thriller remake is going to be.
The Apple TV series inspired by Cape Fear is being called a “nightmare remix” of the classic Robert De Niro film by its creator, Antosca. This show is the third adaptation of John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners and centers on public defenders Anna and Tom Bowden, who find themselves targeted by a vengeful former client named Max Cady.
In a recent interview with Empire, showrunner Antosca discussed how the new Cape Fear series will both echo and diverge from the original. He explained that the show will build tension by tapping into viewers’ anxieties as Anna Adams and Tom struggle with the cruel manipulations of Max, played by Javier Bardem. Here’s what Antosca shared:
It feels like someone took existing ideas, twisted them into something disturbing, and then layered on current cultural trends. It’s a dark and unsettling reimagining of familiar concepts.
The show thrives on a sense of paranoia. It wants you to either feel like a hidden observer, or like you’re the one under surveillance.
Although this is a fresh take on Cape Fear, Martin Scorsese – who directed the 1991 film starring Robert De Niro – is an executive producer on the new show. This gave showrunner Nick Antosca the chance to share scripts with Scorsese and get his feedback. Antosca says Scorsese’s insights were crucial to shaping the series.
I’d reach out to him and ask for help with the scene. We’d work with him, and he’d suggest small adjustments, like trimming a shot by a few frames. His feedback was consistently excellent, as you’d expect.
This new TV series differs from past versions of the story by having Max seek revenge against both of the characters played by Adams and Wilson. Anna Bowden previously represented him as his lawyer, and Tom Bowden put him on trial. This creates added conflict and will be a central focus throughout the show’s ten episodes.
The 1991 film Cape Fear was directed by Martin Scorsese and starred Robert De Niro as Max Cady and Nick Nolte as lawyer Sam Bowden. It’s actually a remake of a 1962 movie with the same title, which featured Robert Mitchum as Max and Gregory Peck as Sam Bowden.
The new season of the show appears to be building on the themes of the first, with drama surrounding Max’s release from prison and a growing conflict between Anna and Tom, who previously opposed each other during Max’s trial. It seems both Anna and Tom are hiding things, which likely explains why Max is so determined to uncover their secrets once he’s free.
According to creator Antosca, the new Cape Fear TV series will be a particularly suspenseful take on the story, and it looks like it’s shaping up to be a remarkable adaptation. It’s already distinct enough from the earlier versions to suggest it will offer a fresh and compelling narrative, with these differences promising to heighten the overall tension.
Cape Fear premieres Friday, June 5 on Apple TV.
