Flash Gordon is a true science fiction icon. He began as a comic strip character debuting on January 7, 1934, portraying a handsome and athletic Yale graduate who unexpectedly became a space hero. When Dr. Zarkov takes him on a rocket ship to prevent Earth from colliding with the planet Mongo, Flash embarks on a series of galactic adventures. Considered a hugely influential American comic strip, Flash Gordon has entertained audiences for generations and is now entering an exciting new chapter.
Mad Cave Studios and King Features revealed a new Flash Gordon comic book issue, #0, kicking off the next stage in the hero’s adventures. The issue is written by bestselling author Dan Abnett, known for his work on Superman and Judge Dredd, with art by Manuel Garcia (The Avengers, Star Wars), colors by Ceci de la Cruz, and lettering by Taylor Esposito. This special prelude issue establishes a fresh direction for the iconic character. The main cover art is by Joe Quinones (She Hulk), and a variant cover is by Miguel Mercado (X-Men).
It’s a New Era For a Classic Hero — Including New Characters and Adventures

The latest take on Flash Gordon aims to capture what fans have always loved about the character, ensuring it remains entertaining for years to come. Mad Cave and King Features promise a more realistic Flash Gordon, a renewed sense of space exploration, and a powerful, ever-present cosmic danger – everything needed for a thrilling story that will keep readers engaged.
“I’m reveling in this opportunity to create new stories for Flash Gordon,” Abnett said in a statement. “He’s simply an iconic character and one who has stayed with us through the years. This is a fresh start, but we’ll be acknowledging and honoring the great legacy of stories that have gone before. We’re taking the classic trio of Flash, Dale, and Zarkov on an epic new voyage (they are such great personalities to write) and adding some new supporting characters to push and test the interpersonal dynamics. There will be shocks! Twists! Surprises! New alien threats! A bold new status quo! And I’m lucky to be working with Manuel, who, let me just say, is producing the most amazing art. Every time pages come in, my jaw drops. I hope we do justice to the legend that is Flash Gordon… looking at the art, I think we’re going to!”

Flash Gordon has always been a rebel, both as an athlete and an adventurer. Now, he’s been asked to train a new team of explorers, and they quickly find themselves in a dangerous battle! What starts as a simple training exercise around Neptune’s moons turns into a life-or-death hunt for aliens, and one of the new recruits believes they can handle things on their own, without Flash’s help. This new Flash Gordon story introduces a fresh group of characters – both friends and foes – and sets the scene for a thrilling, action-packed adventure!
When Mad Cave Studios gave me the chance to work on Flash Gordon, I was so excited that I played the soundtrack from the Queen movie over and over again – my family actually threatened to evict me! It’s a real honor to draw such an iconic character, and it’s something I’ll definitely be telling my grandkids about.
Flash Gordon Has Had Major Influence (And We’re Still Waiting For a New Film)
According to Garcia, Flash Gordon holds a significant place in comic book history. The comic strip heavily influenced the creation of early superheroes; Superman’s costume, for example, was modeled after Flash Gordon’s, and a drawing of Batman in Detective Comics #27 took inspiration from a 1937 illustration by Alex Raymond. Like many superheroes, Flash Gordon has also appeared in films, starting with serials in the 1930s and 40s, and including the well-known 1980 movie. More recently, Disney/Fox announced an animated film project with Taika Waititi writing and directing, but it was later changed to a live-action film. There haven’t been any substantial updates about the project since then.
The new Flash Gordon #0 comic from Mad Cave will be available in stores on April 8, 2026. It sets the stage for a new story arc beginning with Flash Gordon #16, which retailers must order by April 9th.
