When people think of spooky and unusual families, *The Addams Family* always comes to mind. But this family has a surprisingly long history! Originally created by Charles Addams, they first appeared as cartoons in *The New Yorker*. Since then, they’ve become a pop culture phenomenon, and their first live-action adaptation happened much earlier than many realize. *The Addams Family* actually premiered as a television series on September 18, 1964, meaning they’ve been entertaining audiences for over 60 years – paving the way for even modern hits like the one on Netflix.
The original live-action *Addams Family* series defined how the family was brought to life on screen. While it wasn’t a perfect copy of the source material, the producers aimed for a slightly less menacing, yet still eccentric, portrayal. This adaptation successfully introduced the family to a new generation of fans, paving the way for the popular 1990s movies. Interestingly, the recent Netflix series *Wednesday* seems to have largely overlooked those films. *Wednesday* has instead revitalized interest in the Addams Family, deliberately emphasizing the dark and spooky elements that longtime fans appreciate.
The Addams Family Series
The original *Addams Family* TV show aired from 1964 to 1966, producing a total of 64 episodes. The series focused on the famously quirky Addams family and their unusual take on family life. Viewers quickly fell in love with characters like Gomez, Morticia, Fester, Thing, Lurch, Wednesday, and Pugsley, along with extended family members like Cousin Itt, Ophelia, and Grandma Frump.
Although *The Addams Family* was filmed in black and white, the actual set was surprisingly colorful! To achieve the right shades and contrast on film, the creators used a lot of pink – the set, including the carpet, wallpaper, and furniture, was entirely pink. That’s quite a contrast to the darker aesthetic of the modern *Wednesday* series!
Giving Rise to Modern Incarnations
It’s no surprise that Netflix’s hit show *Wednesday* owes so much to the original *The Addams Family* (1964). While *Wednesday* focuses on a single member of the family, the classic series clearly laid the groundwork. Since its debut in 2019, *Wednesday* has become Netflix’s most popular English-language series, topping the charts in more countries than any other show-though *Squid Game* still holds the record for total views.
The Addams Family has inspired many spin-offs and continuations over the years. While the original live-action series was a great start, it’s definitely not the only adaptation. The popularity of *Wednesday* is already expanding the Addams universe, with a new series focusing on Uncle Fester currently in development.
